Do I take the washer off or leave it on?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Do I take the washer off or leave it on?

Post by slackercruster »

I have a Ruger 22/45 MK III. When I remove the knurled muzzle protector there is a washer. Do I leave the washer on when I use the silencer or take it off?

Thanks

Exactly what model 22/45 do you have? 3908, 3906, 10149, 10150, other?

Did you buy it NIB threaded from the factory or preowned and of unknown thread pedigree?

How long are the threads?

What does the washer look like?

This question is almost useless without pictures but as a general rule no washer.

It's probably the wiggly factory washer, like a spring, that keeps the factory thread protector on. My Lite has the same thing, but it leaves a gap when I leave it on with my Axiom mounted. There's a small inletted portion in the thread protector that the washer/spring sits in, I would guess most cans don't have that. I run my can without the washer/spring, and it works just fine.

You are lucky because wave washers do NOT crush evenly and can cause the can to be canted. Repaired too many cans from wave washers.

Gonna have to second Mr. Squint here, if washers were a good idea on cans, they'd come with them. Seems to me that all the contact surfaces between the can and the barrel are perfect and designed to match up so the bores stay aligned. That wiggly washer is just to keep the thread protector on the 22/45 from wiggling off during shooting, that's why it has the little recess. That's the same reason I got rid of the thread adapter that came with my EA modified EFK barrel for my FiveseveN, nothing was square, and it jammed up against the threads. Worried me quite a bit, regardless of what EA said, so I called up SilencerCo and got one of theirs. Works perfectly.

Probably depends a lot on the can and how tight the bore.

True, some cans are ridiculously loose tolerances.

I recored a 22lr cans that has a .35 hole in it! Manufacturer claimed the cnc screwed up and made the holes too big.

You need to go look at one before you toss claims like that out there. By "lightweight" he means paper thin wave washer. It won't hurt anything.

Wave washers are wave washers are wave washers, a thin one has less a chance than a thick one of causing a baffle strike.

But even if it was a 10% chance WHY would you use it when there is NO need for it to begin with?

The wave washer is just intended to keep the thread protector from coming loose. You should always remove it before using the suppressor. I'd be concerned about the washer making the suppressor not seat evenly against the barrel.

Manual: https://ruger-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/_ma ... arkIII.pdf
See page 32.

Also see this thread: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/sh ... p?t=453064

"Make sure to remove the "wave" washer that is supplied by Ruger with the thread protector. I just received my first can (SS Sparrow) a few days ago and my first fifty shots were all over the target. Once I figured out that the washer was not allowing the suppressor to seat properly, all is well with outstanding accuracy. Hope this is helpful to you or anyone else new to cans like me."
