You might not know, but you can actually use a chronograph for things other than determining what rounds are subsonic in your gun.

I do know that. Here are some other things I know:

1. OP asked about factory ammo. He doesn't reload.
2. OP isn't tuning any loads for a specific target velocity.
3. If OP doesn't already own a chrono, your advice would require him to buy one, and he would still have to buy and test the brands of ammo he listed.
4. The presence or absence of sonic crack is far less subjective than you seem to believe. And even if it was very subjective, what matters is OP's satisfaction with the noise level of his gun, which is a totally subjective endpoint.
5. Knowledge of the specific velocity of factory ammo does not guarantee it will sound good to OP.

Ergo, I conclude that:

1. Your advice will cause OP to spend at least $100 more than is necessary to answer his question, and will not stop him from having to buy, shoot, and listen to the same amount of factory ammo,
2. Objective velocity data is not needed to answer a subjective question, and
3. You are a glib smartass.

Emilio: True, you don't need one, but they're nice to have to check if your barrel/rifle is fast/slow, see if the factory is making up velocity claims, etc. In the grand scope of things, especially if we're frequenting ST and have NFA money, $100 isn't that much cash, and you can get some interesting (and sometimes disappointing) data from them.

A. You never made it clear you were answering a question other than the one posed by this thread… sure, a chronograph is useful in all sorts of situations which are not relevant to this discussion.

B. If you think I'm angry, you need to grow thicker skin. And again, I understand that a chronograph provides hard data, but I have trouble with your insistence that the data it provides is relevant to the discussion at hand. If the question is, "which of these brands of ammunition has the lowest average velocity?" a chronograph would be quite helpful. But if the question is "tell me which of these brands will sound the best from a suppressed MP5?" a chronograph will do nothing to answer that. That's an inherently subjective question, and subjective listening will provide the correct answer 100% of the time, for no additional cost or testing complexity.

C. Are you calling me a dumbass, or simply making a general platitude? If the former, I've been called worse, and am secure in my intellect.

D. Please don't pretend you can take the high road here. You are the one who made the arrogant and sarcastic comment about me not knowing what chronographs are for. You'll note from the other posts that third parties feel you are the aggressor. I would feel a little worse about making an ad hominem if it wasn't provoked. And I don't feel bad about cursing at all, because, adulthood.

I am still here, haha. I love how forums do this. I ordered Remington UMC 147gr, 500 rounds of it. I am going to go test it in the Beretta 92FS and the MP5 this week and I will let you know.

I am not going to buy a chrono, I can easily hear with my ears if a round is sub or super sonic. I also probably won't be hand-loading for a long time if ever and even then I may never get a chrono. I have alot of other things I want first such as an ultrasonic cleaner.

A tumbler cleans the carbon and junk off the baffles better? With steel pins or walnut shells or?

I use steel pins and soapy water. It works better for me than the ultrasonic I bought and the risk of aluminum damage is much smaller.

There are a few threads on it almost everywhere you look and several videos.
