How many really want a NEW 9mm bolt action carbine?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Picked this up today.
Added a cheap scope, cheap bipod, Gemtech Multi-mount 9mm Suppressor

Unfortunately it will not be possible to get to the range this weekend.
*sigh*

I don't usually post group sizes since they vary so much by shooter, but your challenge is to better another owners consistent <.500" at forty yards.
And the guy who is right at 1.00" at a hundred yards.
Pretty sure both of them have a bipod fitted too.
They have the same ten land and groove barrel you got.

With the closed breech and 147 or 158 grain rounds you should be able to shoot in the garage or back yard and no one will know.

Almost forgot to mention that the raffle gun Novem was picked up today.
Now waiting for the tickets to be printed.
A thousand tickets at $10.00 each.
Multiple prizes, the Novem is only one of at least four.
Raffle ends and prizes will be awarded when the last ticket sells.
First winner gets first pick.
At these prices I want my gas 100 octane, leaded, and my windshield washed!

Range trip will have to wait for a week.
The test with phone books was done.

American Eagle 147gr FMJ was louder than I expected, but quieter than any previous 9mm host.
Being in an enclosed space reflected a lot of sound back at me.
Outdoors it will probably be silly quiet.

On Target 147gr was much louder, possibly transonic.
I have the same issue with On Target 300BLK 208gr.
Penetrated deeper that the AE FMJ.

I like plated bullets because the are cleaner to shoot than lead, yet they are very soft and deform/mushroom, and tear nastier holes in stuff than FMJ.

Going to the range Monday, due to the freezing rain today and tomorrow.

I did pull the 3BUCC fabric shell catcher off the bushmaster I will be selling, and added it to the Novem/TCM.

Range day:
This rifle needs breaking in.
The more I shot it, the smaller the groups were, and the smoother the action was.
It started a little rough but I put Gunslik on the bolt (grease and graphite) so it would polish itself with use.
I may do some hand polishing of rough spots on the bolt.

It does not eject shells with vigor - I need to work on that so the shells go deep into the shell catcher.

Every now and then It was very hard to close the bolt, and then hard open it to eject the empty.
I assume some unburnt powder got into the chamber as I manipulate the rifle.
I found no markings or scratches on the case or the bullet, when I ejected a hard-to-chamber round.
This mostly happened with On Target, which are commercial reloads. Hmmmm...... I had a similar problem with On Target 300BLK rounds. Hmmmmm again.

I shot (all were 147gr subsonic) American Eagle FMJ, On Target plated, Remington JHP, and Federal JHP (govmt overrun for some Special people).

The second round and the fourth round in the magazine of the Federal JHP would not feed well.
The hollowpoint was large and caught on the lower edge of the feed ramp. The rounds need to angle up a tad more in the magazine. I might play with one.
I may also do some ramp polishing.

Everything else fed well, including the Remington JHP.

I requested the barrel be 17" in case the threaded portion had to be cut off (for legal reasons or just because the next owner wanted to) and still be 16.2 or so.

Therefore:
The American Eagles went supersonic 1-2 times out of 10
The On Target plated went supersonic AT LEAST 2 times out of 5
The Federal rarely went transonic
The Remington was the quietest, and never went transonic.

My cheap scope had a "mil-dot" in the center (for god's sake, why?) which did not help my accuracy.

The Remington and Federal were equally accurate, with one-big-hole about 1" in diameter, at 50 yards. ( 0.645" center to center)
American Eagle was so-so but somewhat inconsistent. One time 4 shots inside a 1-inch circle at 50 yards, the next 5 shots scattered 3+ inches.
The On Target plated was very inconsistent; the "groups" were 2 to 4 inches at 50 yards.

Point of impact at 25 yards was not materially different than at 50 yards.

Conclusion:
The more expensive, jacketed ammunition was more consistently subsonic and with much smaller groups.
The 17" barrel is a challenge to keep pistol rounds subsonic. BBTI shows subsonics accelerating until around the 18 inch barrel length.
I have some 158gr Fiocchi and PPMU inbound. I will test them before trying to develop my own 158gr subsonic round, with as fast burning powder as is prudent, to make a quieter round, and hopefully more accurate.

BTW - after 80 rounds, the multimount suppressor was barely warm to the touch.
On a Beretta 92, it would have been quite hot to the touch.
On a 7" 9mm AR it would be burning hot, but then again I would have shot 200+ rounds in half the time I did a tad less than 100 today.

I copied this from Ballistics by the inch (BBTI) to illustrate, since I do not have a chronometer:

barrel Federal
length 147 gr.
..........Hydra Shock
..........JHP
----- ------------------
18" 1083
17" 1096
16" 1073
15" 1090
<snip>
5" 1007
4" 951
3" 902
2" 837

That's quite a difference between brands. With the Federal being from an over run, can you get a deep pile of it?

Pics of the first Novem to get a synthetic stock below.
I try to set the head-space to the tight end of the range so any round that is a fraction long may come up a bit hard to chamber.
Probably more of an issue with reloads.
I could set them looser but I figure tight will stay in spec better.
Bolt action does not have the luxury of a "Floating" bolt like an AR or other semi-auto.
