Suggestions for a new compact 9mm suppressor host?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Suggestions for a new compact 9mm suppressor host?

Post by DMY »

I am looking for a 9mm suppressor host that has a non-tilting barrel. The barrel can be fixed or it can slide back but not tilt. Any suggestions here?

I know the Beretta 92 family of pistols is an option. Not a bad gun but I want some other options.

Here is the back story:

I have a fast-access gun safe that holds my nightstand gun. The safe will accommodate a compact pistol and a small suppressor. I already have a small suppressor - it is a Thompson Machine micro suppressor. It does NOT have a disconnector. So far, I have been unable to get it to run sufficiently reliable on two hosts: a G19 and a Walther PPX. I believe the problem is a common one: the extra mass on the end of the barrel is robbing too much energy from the action. There is not enough force left to send the slide all the way back. As a result, the spent round is not ejecting.

I thinking going to a longer barrel will help for a variety of reasons, but I need to stay with a compact pistol so that it will fit in my safe.

Try a lighter recoil spring on the G19, if you can't find a suitable host. Glockmeister.com has several weights for all generations.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Thanks for the replies guys. I never heard of that Boberg gun before! Very interesting design - a bullpup pistol!

I have been thinking about a softer recoil spring on the Glock. I am worried that it will not have enough force to peel the next round out of the magazine and into the chamber. Also, what happens if I forget the softer spring is in there and shoot it unsuppressed - am I looking at damage to the gun?

Kind of off my own target, but the Walther PK380 checks most of the boxes. Fixed barrel, poly frame, light rail, etc. The only real problem I have with that (besides that pesky external safety) is that it's a 380, and I would be taking a substantial muzzle energy hit compared to 9mm... which is about the smallest I want to go.

It will cycle "harder" with a softer spring, so chambering the next round shouldn't be an issue. I'm running a 20lb spring for max lock time in my Gen4 G19 for suppressed shooting, and it barely ejects, as it takes a lot more force to move the slide back. It's my EDC, so I replace the stock spring, and barrel after every session for reliability. A softer spring will be a little harder on the gun, but I would only worry about it if running +P, or +P+. "Standard" 115gr, and 124gr loads should be fine.

Here is the link to their custom 1pc assembly, I think a 15lb unit should get it running reliably. http://www.glockmeister.com/Glockmeiste ... /G4SS19CS/

I thought the Walther PK380 had a tilt barrel?

Anyway, if you go .380 ACP your options will increase dramatically. Lots of .380's are blowback, and therefore fixed barrels. With modern ammunition (I like Cor-Bon DPX) .380 ACP is an effective round. Pesky external safeties are irrelevant with double action/single action pistols. Leave it hammer down, safety off, and you are good to go.

There's this HK P7 PSP on sale for $1400 Pluses:Full length 4.1" barrel in a compact package. Minuses: Euro mag release (heel), 8+1 capacity.

I have a Thompson Poseidon. I have been using it on a full sized and compact double stack M&P 9mm. I also used it on a Glock 19. I had no cycle functions.
NFA shooters blow their load with only one pull of the trigger.

Wow. Mine does not want to function on my G19 or my PPX with either type of ammo. What guns are you using?

I don't have a single problem with tilting barrels and a full size cans.

Keep it simple and proven, why buy an exentric gun just for a fixed barrel THEN have issues with high price conversions mags and parts?

Buy guns that already work. ( yes Beretta's work but not on my top 10 list)

Are 1911s good suppressor hosts? I know the barrel link pin draws the barrel down in a circular motion vs the straight angle of the blower barrel lugs of polymer guns. Maybe his would help a decoupler- free can to cycle?

229 and 226, works every time so far

Just like anything mechanical I suspect they will fail eventually.
