How do you lock up your HD gun? / Pistol safe for my 220

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

How do you lock up your HD gun? / Pistol safe for my 220

Post by nch734 »

I'm looking for a safe, preferably a quick access one (ie a gunvault) that can fit my sig p220 with tirant 45 attached...

Anyone know of anything that might work?
What are your solutions?
How do you guys deal with this if you use a can on your hd pistol?

Kids? Are you set on it being locked up?

Yeah, I'm set on it being locked up. Not my kids but nieces and nephews always coming over. I'd also feel more comfortable given that it's an NFA device. It doesn't need to be absolutely theft proof, but a deterrent and protection from curious little hands.

I have a small "lock box" quality gun safe next to the bed. It's basically so my daughter can't get into it or someone in the house has to take a bit of time. Flashlight, EDC pistol, extra mag, extra pistol for the lady, extra mag for that. It's the "When we're at home" safe.

Then when we leave if the guns aren't with us, they go into the big safe.

Not theft proof, but slows down kids, nosey guests, etc.

If you can't find a box to suit your needs try camoflage. I keep a mossberg 500 pistol grip on top of my headboard (old waterbed type). Its security is it is simply hidden. No one but my wife and myself know it's there. It is hidden by height and things in front of it but I can still get it fast. It won't stop a determined burglar but it keeps kids hands off.

Might work, but then again kids' curiosity can be a wonderful thing. I recently have an air pistol to a brother for his birthday, adding to his small collection. When all the ogling was done and he wanted to put it away his younger son (aged 10) jumped up and volunteered to get out the air pistol box, then while running upstairs said "Do you need pellets? I know where those are too!" My brother looked at me like WTF? He thought he'd been pretty thorough at hiding and camouflage. Nope. A curious kid will find just about anything in whatever time they get alone in a room. They might not be so up front about it as my nephew either, especially if it's something they think they might get into trouble for knowing.

Some handgun safe with a simplex lock. Fort Knox has a good one. They are about $190.

I have in my past (much poorer days) used a portable tool box with a padlock on it. Simple, cheap, disguised, and affective.

Back when kids were around, I had multiple gun safes made be Stack-On. They have all shapes and sizes, including those that fit in a drawer. Most in the $40-$80 range. They can be bolted or screwed to a drawer or whatever. Call it kid proof but not burglar or fire proof. I've gotten good service out of mine and can get into them in 2 seconds. My big mama safe is burglar proof, or as much as a 1,100 lb safe can be.

Do you like it? I'm about to order one for my HK45 APOCS w/ an Osprey45 on it. No other option out there.

Yes, but I am the one making them. It's still a relatively small market, and the bulk manufacturers will be interested when they see enough numbers. Then will produce some flimsy version with more marketing $ than steel

It is a unique feature to this brand of safes. It's a deadbolt to the push-button lock when additional security is wanted and not quick access. Maybe you leave a HD gun in there all the time. It also funtions as a backup key entry. This feature can be disabled easily if you don't want the backup key function. It's also not your average key lock found on handgun safes.

Nice job, it's as good as anything else I've seen out there and seems better than most.

I had a bush button safe hidden by the bed and replaced it, years later I forgot the combo and my boy opened it in seconds with a trick he found on line. " stupid easy".

90+% of the safes out there are only good enough to restrict access from kids and the unambitious ... what's your point?

That's all he wanted was something to keep kids out anyway.

And you misspelled "too".
