Anyone coating their baffles?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Anyone coating their baffles?

Post by JeffWard »

Griffin now coats their baffles in TiN (Titanium Nitride), which makes them more durable and easier to clean. I spoke to a Tampa Bay local guy who does high-end coatings, and he suggested TiAIN (Titanium/Aluminum Nitride), which is less porous than TiN, and completely impervious to ultrasonic cleaning. It bonds VERY well with Stainless, and might be a huge improvement for the ease of cleaning for rim-fire cans, and pistol cans...

Any experience or inputs?

A lot of people are turning toward silicone.

There are some food grade products out there that are good for -40 to +500 degrees.

In the tests I've seen 90+% of the residue wipes off the baffles with a paper towel

I know a guy, who knows a guy... who coats high-speed parts for a little company called NASA. They dip VERY large trays of parts in huge coating vats. There's quite often a LITTLE extra space on the tray that will accommodate gun parts... This keeps my costs down...

I'll do my research on high temperature silicone spray too though! What products are people using? Point my head! Thx

I just started to coat my baffles w/silicon oil - heat the parts to be coated and submerge in the oil...
But have not shot enough to take apart for cleaning so - MTF

TiN coating can be had for less than $50 so sneaking suppressor parts to a guy to give to a non licensed flunky to coat them off the books doesn't balance the risk/reward equation for me.

I don't know anyone using a spray.

Some people have reported good results with PMX 200 and similar products.

The problem with adding exterior coatings like TiN, anodizing, NP3, teflon etc...is that the ATF considers them manufacturing processes and therefore whoever is plating it must be an 07/02.

This is why frog lube, silicone, and other home remedies are so popular.

That was an interesting report...
