Searching for a .22 pump, bolt, lever, auto that will shoot shorts & LR

I have a .22 can and love it. I can't find a long gun except single shots that do not have a tubular magazine that will shoot shorts as well as long rifles. LR .22s are scarce around here. Sub-sonic .22 long rifles even harder to find. Shorts are always sub-sonic, and availability seems to be easier to find. I've sized up my Rem 552 "Speedmaster" (shoots shorts, longs, long rifles) that has a tubular magazine and there is no way a can will work without removing the can to load the gun.

Years ago, Marlin made an auto-loader (I have one) that loaded from the butt plate but it only shoots LR.

Any ideas? I'd buy new or used. A shortened tubular magazine would be OK as long as I didn't have to take the can off to reload.

I remember reading somewhere that someone made a modified 10/22 magazine that will load and feed 22shorts. This should allow you to use it in any Ruger that uses a 10/22 magazine. Of course this means it may not cycle a 10/22 but it would be fine in a Ruger American Rimfire.

I'll see if I can find it and post it if I do.

That's cool, I didn't see they made a kit to convert a 10/22 to shoot shorts reliably. But won't this mean you can't shoot LRs anymore? I can definitely recommend the Ruger American Rimfire if you don't care that much about an autoloader mine is awesome and very accurate with my Sparrow on it. I have gotten to the point where I can hold still enough to hit a 4" gong at 170 yards almost every shot with CCI standard velocity.

I've looked at the Henry lever gun. The trouble is they have a tubular magazine under the barrel. You have to pull the "bullet pusher" out of the magazine parallel to the barrel to load bullets. It would hit the back of my can. I checked my 552 Remington that has the same arrangement and I'd have to take the can off to reload it.

I have maybe 400 sub-sonic .22 LR on the shelf. I'd be satisfied if I could find more of them. What piddle amount of .22s available for sale are supers. They don't go super in my Walther P22 but do in my long guns.

The VQ short kit is only if you want the gun to cycle, if you're content with it not cycling then you just need the magazine. Honestly I'd try loading some shorts in your factory LR magazine and see if they cycle. Since they both headspace on the rim you won't have any issues other than the need to scrub the chamber after shooting shorts.

You could lower the tube to clear the can.

I've shot shorts through my magazine fed suppressed Savage and they fed as long as you dont bump the mag around, I could also modify some mags for it but I find shorts useless. CCI "quit" blew all three brand boxes of shorts away in sound and was easy to find and $26 a brick , you can also get CCI standards on line but it will cost you.

22 ammo is coming back and if you want to shoot HV quietly use a pistol or SBR.

OH, and next time stock up, I still have cases from the first scare (pre Obomination)

The link to Palmetto State Armory proved fruitful. I ordered two bricks of sub-sonic LR from them as they had them in stock. This solves my immediate rifle suppressor problem. My Walther P22 pistol is sub-sonic with most .22s available in stores around me.

I use the short hollow points in my 552 Remington auto for squirrels. It shoots shorts, longs and LRs. The extra capacity and easy handling of a tube feed magazine gives me the chance to waste ammo.

I may still check on the rotary magazine adapter for the 10/22 in the fall for rifle suppressor work.

Thanks all for the info.

Marlin made a bunch of tube and mag fed bolt guns that cycled short, long, and long rifle. They were also marketed as Glenfield and Coast to Coast.

Not all shorts are subsonic. Some use a lighter bullet and run fast enough to crack out of a rifle.

I have a couple of these...

Once you see the modification, you can easily make more yourself, saving some $$.

They're the cheapest I could find, and they're Ruger. They work.

I have a Remington Model 34 bolt action that shoots shorts, longs & long rifle rounds interchangeably, also have several Remington 550-1's semi's that will handle those sizes. These guns have a floating chamber and feed all three rounds. Best kept secret: you don't even need a can on a 550-1 w/24" barrel shooting shorts, sounds like a BB gun. The 550-1 cycles the CCI 'low noise' rounds flawlessly. The 550-1 tubular magazine holds 21 shorts, and for some reason, this gun was excluded from the AWB and the high cap restrictions. Great rifle, the Remington 550-1, I have 5 and love rebuilding them. Ask me how to get the sear cup back in place in 30 seconds or less with no stripped threads.
