Barrel to Short

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Barrel to Short

Post by Stealth Tactical »

ed brown colt 1911 threaded barrel to short for silencer
it is 5.5 inches and I am using a Ti-Rant 45 with a short piston
My problem is the silencer screws up to the barrel bushing.
Is there a adapter or can I have a custom piston made?

Same problem here. I was thinking of having the piston cut down (I have an extra 45 piston) until it didn't push against the bushing anymore. Is this a bad idea?

AAC lists a piston on their sight as "short -1911 only" in addition to a regular long one in .578-28.

Sorry for double post. Would the long one work?

I've tried both. The problem isn't the piston, it's that the threaded part of the barrel isn't long enough to to shoulder on the piston without bumping into the bushing and pushing it out of battery. I'm thinking shaving the piston down will solve that as long as it's perfectly square.

Have you tried calling AAC? There are pictures of Tirants on the web, mounted to 5.5" 1911s.

That can't be right. Call the barrel manufacturer.

My guess is that the barrel requires the muzzle to register inside the mount, rather than registering on the thread's shoulder. I believe the short "1911 only" piston is designed to accommodate.
