Can I do this? (Baffle swap)

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Can I do this? (Baffle swap)

Post by Thwik »

Looking for some advise.

I've got a HTA guardian with stainless baffles and I want aluminum baffles.

If I were to find someone local that wanted to swap, is that legal?

The ATF once defined every part of a suppressor as a suppressor in and unto itself for purposes of transfer.

Sticking to the letter of this twisted logic I would venture to say you would be flirting with, if not doing a full swan dive into, a bona fide ATF felony for a multiple illegal transfers.

I would tend to think, as asinine as it is, that not being able to legally buy new baffles for your suppressor at the LGS is a clear indication the ATF would frown on transferring suppressor parts in the K-Mart parking lot.

I'm not even sure you could pay an 07/02 to "legally" swap baffles between two suppressors from different owners.

This is, of course, one of those things that has gotten responses like "who would know if you didn't post it on the internet".

That was my guess - and going with the whole "If you have to ask..." line, probably can't be that easy.

I don't have a donor can in mine, but I know a lot of folks want the SS baffles so I'm sure a local post offering up the trade would generate interest.
Of course posting up something of that nature might be a bad idea.

I've toyed with the idea of an 07/02 re coring it, but it would probably not be cost effective.

More cost effective than a new can.

Talk to SRI. I think there are a couple other shops with memberships here that offer recoring services so you can ask around.

where are you buying your cans? going to a SOT 07/02 requires doing ITAR and thats what $2250 per year? just in that one tax/permit.

He's talking about taking the can to a 07/02 do do the work. Not becoming an 07/02 himself.

Am curious ... why would you want the aluminum stack instead of the SS stack? Much harder to clean without damaging the baffles!

Is the weight that big a concern?

I don't really clean my cans so I don't care about that.
