What are the thoughts on the new Larson & Davis soundtrack LXT1 sound meter , is it as good as the old BK2209 ?
For measuring suppressed & un-suppressed firearms .

Looks pretty cool.
Comes with a 1 year from date of purchase full refund no questions asked warranty.
That's the LXT1-QPR, assuming it's the same model you're talking about.

Dunno
The lower end models wouldn't likely be any better than a radio shack meter.
I wish they gave actual specs of the QPR meter, like rise time and distortion at peak etc.

Re: Larsondavis sound meter
The Larson Davis Digital meters do not meet Mil-Std testing requirements.
Rise time is 30 micro seconds and the sample rate is 51,200. Rise time should be 20 micro seconds or less and 160,000 sample rate to meet the standard.
The Larson Davis 800B meets the standards when set up properly.

What about a current, in production meter? Surely there is something available.John Titsworth wrote:The Larson Davis Digital meters do not meet Mil-Std testing requirements.

Thinking about silencer testing, in my basic research, there is the thought that the Mil-Spec isn't exactly appropriate for silencers. Perhaps, as an industry, we can come up with a more complete standard. Didn't Dr. Dater put something out there like this?

If the LXT1 QPR is no good for gunshots etc , Why dose the company say its capable of use with firearms , explosions etc ?
Seems real weird , would like to see the actual specs of the unit as well .

While I think there are certainly improvements that can be made with testing of suppressors, the proper equipment is first and foremost. Phil, myself and several others have often discussed changing the standard, but it mostly relates to mic placement and duration of sound and some other stuff. The equipment wouldn't change really. Rise time in my opinion should be something on the order of less than ten micro seconds.

The actual specs of the unit are available to see online. Its marketing. Thats why I call these meters Marketing Meters, cause thats all they are good for. They don't provide results that indicate the actual sound pressure levels created by silencers. There are digital options out there that meet the standards, but they are not cheap and usually cost between 20K and 50K by the time you are done getting set up.
Re: Larsondavis sound meter
Yes they are with a minor amount of digging through the PDFs. I didn't look at the specs before only the features listed in the web page.John Titsworth wrote:...

"<30ms", ~50k sample rate.
