Which silencer to use on Ruger Precision Rifle?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Which silencer to use on Ruger Precision Rifle?

Post by YugoRPK »

I just bought a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308. I'm trying to figure out which silencer to use on it. I have a Specwar and SIG 762ti thread mount to chose from. Those are the silencers I have , not that I am considering buying. This to be a up to 600 yard gong ringing rig . Which is going to cause less POI shift and would the muzzle brake/flash hider of the specwar degrade the inherent accuracy of the rifle when shooting without the silencer attached?

Would you have to buy mounts or could you try each for compairison? When it comes to that level of accuracy, I'd want to know for sure. I also think there are enough variables that the answer may be specific to your rifle and load.

Seems to me that if you put the flash hider in the spec war it makes it a direct thread. No reason to worry about timing it or rockset, just shoot some groups out of each can and take notes. Then if you want to be very thorough, also shoot bare muzzle and flashider only. A flash hider or muzzle brake should not reduce accuracy, but they can change POI from a bare muzzle.

SIG is lighter, so less POI shift. The semi Palma contour of the RPR isn't as rigid as a standard bull/varmint contour. Repeatability will probably be about the same between the 2.

Brake, or hider shouldn't have any effect on accuracy, compared to a bare muzzle.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

But a heavier muzzle device might tighten the groups. The barrel harmonics would dampen and less "bbl whip."

So the ? becomes, "Which is most important: less POI shift from bare muzzle, or better accuracy?"

The flash hider could work either way. It could help stabilize the harmonics, or it could add assymetrical leakage around the bullet base. That's why many rifles have either a hunter or match crown 15-35*.

A little off topic.
Which rings for a 50 mm Zeiss scope on that rifle ? Medium or high ? I'm not sure how the 20mil cant will affect the bell on the scope?

Nice setup! 175 grain bullets seem to be the ticket with long range 308, in my experience.
