Glove melted on hot can...how to fix?

My glove melted on my can trying to remove it. How can I remove this melted crap without scrating my can? Would it be ok to use a torch to heat up the melted junk and wipe it off with a wet rag?

Torch would probably localize the heat unevenly. Use an oven, then use a coarse throwaway rag to rub it clean.

You COULD put the hot can in sand to slow cool. I'm not sure the best method to 'heat treat' it after it reaches 800*F or so. Maybe a lower temp would work.

As long as it doesn't cover the engraving, just let it wear off during Range Trips. After shooting it hot again.

Depending on what your glove was made of you could probably get that s--t off with acetone.

I put my Uzi back in a rifle case when the suppressor was still too hot and the liner melted to my can.

Hoppes No 9 took it off with some ever so light rubbing with a green scrub pad meant for washing dishes.

Can looked good as new, no mars/marks.

I would not apply heat and try to rub that s--t off, it'll just smear it around.

My favorite after shave, Hoppes No.9, didn't do a damn thing to get the melted glove off the Omega can. Off to the next method.

Holy cow batman!
I second the comment on Acetone. It's a good solvent. You might also try Goof Off or lighter fluid. Both are very effective in removing goo off things.

You didn't mention what the material was made of. I guessed some version of Plastic or Silicone. Solvents won't react with some synthetics, but work great w others (petroleum-based polymers.)

That might help Members suggest some alternatives. I guessed that you knew about solvents, so I didn't bother mentioning them. I figured that you already narrowed your OP to factor for the material type.

I generally do a few mag dumps and wipe it off with a cotton towel.

They were a cheap pair of tactical gloves with some type of hard backing on the top of the hands and on the grip apart some grippy type material sewn on. I threw them away and don't know exactly what they were. Sorry that is the best I can do but they looked very common for tactical gloves.

Would Gasoline or Kerosene work? I know it eats through Styrofoam and some other synthetics. You'd need to make sure that it doesn't go IN the can though. Also, probably wash the can with soap and water after. Gasoline is not a good ablative medium...

Did you heat it to 800*F and rub it vigorously w a rough material? How did you heat it?

I'm looking for heating options and a labratory hot plate should do the trick ... low end specs say 700 degrees F. It will also allow you temp control with no risk of burning your home down. Um, keep a burn kit nearby. From my past chem experience, many materials at 800 degrees F don't look hot at all.

Ok, so perhaps I tend to overthink things. If you have an electric range, you should be able to get it up to the right temperature range.
One could only assume that reheating back to the same temp range as when you melted it on will greatly assist you in getting it off.

Worse case, take a torch to it, burn it off, then get the can re-coated.

If the finish bothers you bead blast it off to bare metal and get a local to Cerekote it for you.

I have one of those Omegas that the outer shell has come loose and will unscrew from the baffle stack. SilencerCo said that this can be fixed by simply reapplying some red Loctite, but I will do the cleaning before I do that, this will make the cleaning much easier. I am going to use a simple butane kitchen torch to heat the outside and then wipe it with a wet cloth. I just don't want to make scratches by using something with an abrasive.

Torch would probably localize the heat unevenly. Use an oven, then use a coarse throwaway rag to rub it clean.

And using a "wet" cloth is a bad idea. You'll quench the metal and cause embrittlement. Follow my 1st post, that is the safest way not to harm the metal's molecular matrix. It's a ferrous material. You don't want the molecules to misalign. (Even if it's Al or Ti, it's still got a ferrous substrate. That's the Nature of Alloys.)
