plastic coated bullets and silencers?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

plastic coated bullets and silencers?

Post by fishman »

does anyone use plastic coated lead bullets with a silencer? i'd like to avoid lead cast bullets for my 300 blackout AR. however, copper jacketed 200+ grain bullets are not cheap. i came across these and was wondering if they would be a cheap way to prevent lead buildup in my silencer. does anyone have experience with this? http://palmettoprojectiles.com/products ... rojectiles

has anyone used plastic jacket pistol bullets and silencers?

I use Bayou Bullets Hi Tek coated and haven't had any issues. I did see recently someone said they were seeing build up but I haven't noticed any.

Never tried the plastic, but I cast and coated my own w/PC.
I've had good results with leatherheads 220gr coated bullets.

I shoot a lot of 220 gr Leatherhead bullets. My rifle had a bit of trouble cycling from time to time with Palmettos.

No leading issues through my cans.

I think I'll try the leatherheads then, they're about the same price but 220 gn instead of 203

I use HTC and Powder coated bullets for my SMG and 300 BLK. I am seeing a little leading in 9mm and 380 but I do use serviceable suppressors. My personal experience with HTC and PC bullets for 300 BLK has been disappointing. My 300 BLK suppressor is not user serviceable. It has grown in weight by 2 oz since using the HTC bullets.

I do not see leading in the barrel but I do see leading on the muzzle and suppressor. I think this may be the result of different barrel makers, chambers twist rates. Some members at 300BLK.com report no issues but those who have captured fired rounds report problems with stripping the coatings.

Careful case prep and loading is key. The bullets at the bottom show loaded/fired and loaded/pulled bullets. The center 2 show too much crimp. The bullets on the sides show proper crimp but still strip the coating in my 8" Seekins barrel.

If it doesn't splatter, shatter, burst or explode, it's not worth shooting.

Strobro, you either need better coatings, or you aren't baking them long/hot enough. Are those Harbor Freight powders? Are you baking with an oven thermometer so you know the actual temp?

The recovered bullets should not look like that; something is wrong with either your coating process or your bullet size. Look for something more like these:

These guys over at Cast Boolits seem to have a wealth of knowledge about coatings http://castboolits.gunloads.com/google. ... 8246617j18. Powder coatings appears to be the way to go if done correctly to save money. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthr ... ders-don-t
Sizing of the bullet needs to be addressed as the coating adds a little bit. The lube grooves are not needed with PC bullets but don't seem to hurt anything if the bullet size is correct.

I have put upwards of 4,000 rounds of PC bullets without any signs of leading through my Liberty Mystic with 9mm and 300 BO. You still can't shoot them as fast as jacketed rounds in a rifle. They will skid on you if you do.

Some of the other coatings don't work so well. Some people have even tried latex paint with not so good results  .

hardcase, just a suggestion - you can run powder coated cast bullets as fast as jacketed, at least up to 3,000 fps or so, but harder alloys are necessary for high pressure, and gas checks are still required in a gas operated system like an AR. Using a softer alloy like air cooled wheel weights will generally give sub-standard accuracy at full rifle pressures, although it can still be done without leading. Water quenching the same alloy gives me good results in full power 308, 300 Blk, and a number of 35 caliber rifles like 35 Whelen.

yondering,

You are better at this than me. I'm going to send you $10 for 3 of your cast and PC reloaded 300BLK rounds. If they look good when recovered, I visiting you for a personal lesson on casting and powder coating. :)
