So I specifically asked the shop I purchased the Mist 22 from if it was the ported versionand that I wanted NON PORTED.
Picked up the barrel last week and sure as S_IT it was the ported version. No going back now. Now what. Is there a NON permanent way to block the ports that is safe?
I would prefer not to send to gemtech for several weeks having just got it.
My ideas:
high temp tape (max temp of ported gasses?)
high temp orings (max temp of ported gasses?)
Combination of both to take up space so the OD of the taped area is against the I.D of the barrel tube. (possible freaking mess from melted materials)
Tapping ports and using grub/set screws (Bore penetration is my biggest concern here)
JB weld (permanent)
Any suggestions?

I have read about at least one person tapping the ports and using set screws. I think it was "Renegade" on this forum.300WhisperAAC wrote:So I specifically asked the shop I purchased the Mist 22 from if it was the ported versionand that I wanted NON PORTED.

if you use properly sized bolts instead of set screws, then there is no possibility of screwing them in too far and obstructing the bore

Re: Gemtech Mist-22 OOPS, got the ported version
From what I see on Gemtech's site the turned-down portion of the barrel where the porting happens doesn't look like it leaves more than 1/8" or so barrel wall thickness, is that about right? If so, it would be a clever bit of tap work getting those threaded just right such that a bolt is going to have enough turns to stay in place under the pressure of thousands of shots, perhaps supersonic loads, while not going in so far as to mess up the rifling or the bore itself. If pursuing that route I'd probably go for the finest thread practical, bolts with heads on them and threaded right up to the heads, and green Loc-tite or JB Weld to hold them in place permanently. I'd thread with a through-tap just to the point where the leade of the tap threads almost touched the rifling diameter then carefully back out. You would want the bolt threads to snug up mechanically just as the heads touched down on the outer surface, but not so much as to cause distortion in the relatively soft steel of the barrel and cause minor choke points at the ports. It all seems very dodgy. In the face of this challenge, and lacking some sort of 4130 CrMo tape or somesuch to wrap it in, I'd sacrifice the few weeks or whatever and send it in for a swap.
Re: Gemtech Mist-22 OOPS, got the ported version
I made a set of Sparrow-esque clamshells and it worked decently well to keep fouling off the main tube. In the end I sent it back to Gemtech to be plugged. Something happened during the process and after going back again, they replaced it with a non-ported barrel.

I've had my "ported" Mist barrel for almost a year. Im not having any issues with it. I'm curious as to why people are sending them back to have the port filled in.

Re: Gemtech Mist-22 OOPS, got the ported version
I believe Gemtech started to offer a non-ported barrel because people were complaining that the tube was becoming stuck. This was most-likely due to a lack of maintenance, but a good company tries to make its customers happy.OtterBob wrote: I'm curious as to why people are sending them back to have the port filled in.
The ported barrel will allow you to get HV ammo down to subsonic.
The non-ported barrel will need SS ammo to be quietest.
I think using a tube clamp, something like a scope ring w/o the claw, would be the best option.
You don't have to worry about ruining the rifling, getting the set screw length just right, etc.
It would also offer the ability to remove it down the road, if you so choose.
W/o the port you no longer have an integral silencer, now it's a dedicated.
