Re-barreling a Ruger 77/357

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

Re-barreling a Ruger 77/357

Post by Shane357 »

About a year ago I read a post here about a guy that was using a suppressor on a Ruger 77/357 and using 246 grain bullets.

That was such an awesome read that I have decided to copy him. I all ready have a Liberty Mystic X suppressor. I have the Ruger 77/357 but the barrel was messed up (got the gun for $100.00). Some one bulged the barrel about 14-15 inches in. The rest of the gun looks awesome!

What I am thinking though is that accuracy would be improved by a faster twist rate. I have looked at several calculators online and none that I can find are designed for subsonic bullets.

So What would be the idea twist rate for a hunters 246 gr FP bullet at 900-1000FPS? they are .358 diameter and 1.036 inch long. I figure if I have to re-barrel it any way I might as well go with the ideal twist rate. I found a place that does 1 in 18", 1 in 14" and 1 in 10" twist. Thinking of going 16 inches.

Stick with the stock twist rate, it will stabilize up to 300gr bullets and provides excellent accuracy with 245-6gr. My goto heavy sub for my 77-357 is a 245gr SAECO 352 cast bullet with powdercoat.

depending on that 14 to 15 inches...

just shorten the barrel and thread....

personally looking at powder burn rates- 14 to 16 inches is sufficient

my penny's worth
