Neilson device on a fixed barrel?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Neilson device on a fixed barrel?

Post by JeffWard »

I'm waiting on delivery if my fixed piston spacer for shooting my Octane suppressor on a fixed barrel (9mm AR).

Is it safe to shoot a fixed barrel through a Nielsen device without the spacer? Or can I do damage to the piston?

Hello,

The neilsen device moved with the barrel axially, so it should not pose a threat of baffle strikes or anything like that, so you should be ok, but I would suggest waiting for the spacer. I have shot a 9mm carbine with the Neilsen device on my octane 45 and was ok, so while this is not a solid answer, my take away would be that you'd be good, but try to wait for the spacer.

Various posts from the past suggest the biggest threat to a fixed barrel from a booster is thread damage. The theory some pose is the booster may act as a jackhammer on the threads since the barrel doesn't move with the booster.

I have not empirical data to back that up but some of the smithing guys or manufacturers may chime in.

I ended up buying the Direct Thread mount.

The 9mm AR barrel specs list a 1/2X36 thread.
The booster is 1/2X28.

Problem solved.

No, it is not safe. You could damage everything if you shot it like this for an extended period of time.

Direct thread or spacer for that setup is what you want.
