R51: potential as a silencer host?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

R51: potential as a silencer host?

Post by fishman »

I was reading an article about the Remington R51 (and model 51) yesterday. The barrel is fixed during firing. No tilting; no back and forth movement. It however isnt a blowback gun, its a hesitation delayed blowback.

This would make this gun a good choice for a silencer. It wouldn't require a booster/LID. This gives potential for an integral silencer too.

It has a heavy single action only trigger and no safety. If they came out with a full frame double stack version with a light trigger and a safety, I'd be seriously interested.

What do you guys think?

It was talked about on one of the fourms before but I can't remember where.

It is butt ugly. Other than that it doesn't appear worse than any KelTec on the market and people have suppressed those successfully.

Yeah, not too pretty, but a small package no doubt.

Looks like they can be had for $300+

This is the reason I bought the R51 in the first place. As a matter of fact I actually bought the can first, a Thompson Machine BDSD on close out for $202. The problem is Remington has yet to make the threaded barrel they promised, go figure. I've decided that if they haven't brought one out by next year, I'll make my own.

it's strangely reminiscent of the old PPK's. Especially with a can mounted.

But has Remington actually fixed all the earier design flaws that everyone trash talks?
I don't care what your chart says

Yes, they had a recall. You sent in your old R51 and they sent you back a new one, in a hard case with 2 extra mags. Fit and finish of the new ones was night and day better. I never really had any functioning problems with the old one.
