20 vartarg

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

20 vartarg

Post by tripntx »

Can 20 VarTarg be shoot through these 22 suppressors? Host is a 24" CZ-527. I do have a SilCo Omega to use for the 20 VarTarg.

SilencerCo Sparrow SS rated for 22 Hornet and 5.7 x 28mm
Dead Air Mask HD rated for 5.7 x 28mm
Liberty Regulator 17 & 22 rimfire only

Since the .20 Vartarg uses .223 Remington brass necked down for a .204 bullet, then it seems to me that any suppressor safe for .223 Rem would work for the .20 Vartarg (32gr bullet going 3600-3900 fps).

You could ask Silencerco, but the .22 Hornet is 2900 to 3100 fps for a 35 gr bullet; while the .20 Vartarg is 3600-3900 fps for a 32 gr bullet. Therefore, Silencerco may not authorize anything above the .22 Hornet for their SS Sparrow.
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

I was only thinking about powder since the .20 VT uses a .223 that is almost cut in half, but I didn't consider bullet speed. Thanks for mentioning it.

Can it and should it are two different things.

If you shot it through a Mask, it probably won't explode on the first shot and it probably won't be quiet. I've shot 308 through a Ghost, and it didn't explode nor was it quiet. It warped a few of the baffles a bit. (Don't do that at home, I'm not saying 308 is a good idea in a Ghost at all.)

Plus, 5.56 cans sound MUCH better on 5.7 than a 22 can. I'm sure the same would hold true.

You're right, it's the .20 Tactical that uses the .223 Remington brass at full length necked down for the .204 bullet.

All my questions have been answered. I'll either use the Omega or Sandman Ti previously purchased from CA in Austin. Thanks for setting me straight!
