Pistol Suppressor Reliability Issue

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Pistol Suppressor Reliability Issue

Post by Captains1911 »

I just acquired an AAC Illusion 9mm, and today I went to test it on a Gen4 G17 with a Silencerco threaded barrel. First, I tested the gun without the can to ensure the barrel is reliable, and it is with several different types of ammo I tested. Then, I attached the can, and immediately had failure to feed malfunctions with almost every one of the first 10-15 rounds, with two different ammo types, and two different magazines. Then, it seemed to settle in and ran flawlesly. I removed the can, let it cool all the way down, reattached and then loaded up the same mags with the same ammo that caused the initial problems, and it ran 100% reliable.

So any ideas why it was so problematic at first? Could it be that the piston spring needed a little breaking in? This is my first pistol can so I have lite experience with them. Thanks for the help.

My Octane 45 would pop an extra round loose in my Gen 4 G19 till I went with an aftermarket gen 3 guide rod, heavier spring and the gen 4 rod adapter. For me, it was usually the last round. It would be sitting loose on the mag with the slide locked back. Heavy spring seemed to fix it. Lone Wolf has all 3 parts.

Takes a while to get everything worn in in the nielsen device. Your also putting a new sort of loading on the barrel. Give it a few hundred rounds.

Question...should the teeth on the front end of the piston be lubed as well? They seemed to have quite a bit of wear.

Another 60 rounds today of 147gr Speer Gold Dots and Federal HST, no problem at all. I was a little surprised at how loud they are though, considering they’re sub sonic.

Yep, Theyre not as quiet as theyre made out to be. Stounds about like a pneumatic nail gun and they arent exactly quiet either. Gets even louder from a 9mm AR.

I haven’t tried them side by side yet, but the 9mm with subs seems louder than my suppressed .308 bolt gun with supers.

Try it on a 45 out of a pistol. Kind of a let down. My Tirant on my 45 Colt Rossi 92 is pretty quiet but on a pistol its a little too much.

Go 300 BO or .22 if you want quiet.

Action noise and port noise are big.

He can't run .45 through the AAC Illusion can. Its a 9mm can.

Firefox can be a general pain in the ass, recently they fixed some performance issues but made changes to the interface I don't like.

I believe the chrome version of the plugin is called tampermonkey. If you install it and the script from the other post doesn't work then post something back here and I'll fix it for tampermonkey.

ETA: just tried the script in chrome with tampermonkey ... ermagerd! I haven't viewed this site without an ad blocker in years ... oi vey!

It looks like this in chrome

The AAC website is even worse than this one for fonts. Black background with dark grey fonts.

Just to put the OP's mind at ease, it is totally normal for a recoil booster/nielsen device/LID/ASAP system to need a little break-in period. Also, always a good idea to keep the piston and spring assembly lubed up.

I had to send one of my cans and Neilson device back to the manufacturer a few years ago. It came back with the booster heavily greased, with grease not machine oil. Smoked a bit at first but settled down.
