South Africa Enlightened View on Silencers

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

South Africa Enlightened View on Silencers

Trying to track information on the SA Vektor CR21 suppressor as shown in X-ray
in Paulson's Vo.2 266 I ran across an interesting overview article.

It's much the same in quite a few countries. Strange, isn't it? How silencers get demonized in some countries (like Canada - though police and military still get to use them, for health reasons!) but are perfectly acceptable in others. Norway's another example. And the UK, oddly, considering how harsh they are about handguns. One would think that if super-sneaky assassin types were the concern they'd ban rifle silencers, but apparently the hunting and varmint control lobby groups have been successful so far at least. I'd venture a guess that their nation-wide efforts in removing the introduced population of disease-spreading Grey squirrels so as to salvage what's left of their native red squirrels has been largely successful due to silencers on airguns and rimfires.

Less noisy firearms seems so sensible for a variety of reasons, neighbourliness and hearing protection being to obvious ones, along with extended utility in culling numbers of pest animals during one session by avoiding scaring away all but the first one shot. Especially useful for rats and pigeons, both an escalating problem in urban environments, to the point where many UK cities have full-time pest control shooters contracted. For that matter so does my city in Canada and a neighbouring city besides - powerful airguns equipped with silencers deal with such pests by night such that tourists are less affected by them in the day.

And this is another area where criminals really don't care one bit about the laws restricting such devices in whatever region. When criminals are intent on harming people, do lawmakers really believe that they'll pause even for a second in considering whether to use a silencer if doing so would be convenient for them?

+1. A_canadian/

Mae West the comedienne of 1930s movies said to
Gary Grant "Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you
happy to see me!".

The image of a gangbanger walking around with a
moderator on his weapon extending it 6 inches would
most certainly get that question from a LEO stopping him
along with a belly laugh.

Crooked Hillary ( named after Sir Edmond Hillary of Mt. Everest
climb ... oops she was born before that :) ) recently puffed
that silencers should not be made legal. 1934 Act slipped
her legal mind.

A possibility is that they want " the deplorables" to give up
their Second Amendment Rights or preferably go deaf so they cannot hear
Rush, Sean. Levin, etc. :)

What's the big interest in the CR21 suppressor. Its based upon a old patent and should be classified as a moderator according to at least one SA solider I know.

The only reason after 243 years the government now wants to disarm you is they intend to do something you would shoot them for!

CL. What is striking is that the SA 'snorkel' design is similar to the
rare 1960s ~6.8" Parker Hale MM1 - maximum expansion chamber
with a narrow exit tube. For a .22 this would make one consider
investigating the properties of a 9" tube with a snorkel wrapped
in absorbent material. Could an elaboration of the the idea of a quick
expansion chamber and the resulting delay lead to a simplified system?

When HPA passes variations of this theme might be a fun path
to explore.

Best.

This is the modern MM1 using technology borrowed from Qual A Tec and others.

I know this is not the model you used back then, hopefully a print might emerge one day.

The real coup if the HPA passes is all the "special" suppressors that have been fielded might be reveled. The post Korean/Vietnam war influence from Red China would be of interest to me.

Good Captain,

Thank you for the super image of the 'PAHKA Hale :) '
modern suppressor. Notice the length of the expansion
chamber, around ⅓ of the can.

Major Dick Culver* described some Chi-Com cans that
he ran across in Nam when he was with FORENOON.
From the folks that gave us gun powder they were
to be respected.

Standing post at the gates of Valhalla as he so often said.
I have photo I took of Dick with my #2 Randall between his teeth
" ... as any good Marine should appear to his adversary". When I
ever find it I shall post.
