300 magnum suppressor or .338 magnum suppressor?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

300 magnum suppressor or .338 magnum suppressor?

Post by mbogo » Sun Feb 24, 2019 8:28 pm

Which would you consider more 'practical'?

I have several 300 magnums and a couple of .338 magnums.

I'll never load subsonic ammunition in them but want to reduce the report.

At this point in time, I doubt I'll have .338s threaded, buuuut I might buy a .338 Lapua someday.

I am MUCH more like to suppress one or more of the .300s (and .30-06 on down).

If you get a 300 MAG rated can, it will be much cheaper, and if you stick it on a 300 BLK or a .308, it will last a very long time.

A .338 can will cost two to three times as much, be very bulky, and not offer any advantage except you can use it on a .338 at $5 a shot for the cheap ammo.

If you have a .338, get that can. If you don’t it makes no sense to get it.

Also some 30 cans are rated for 300 RUM so cartridges like it or the 300 norma mag might be a better option than 338L. I was looking at a 338L, but am going 300 Norma and will use my Rugged Surge instead of getting a 338 can.
It's not a silencer, it's a can of whoopass!

One of the longer .30 cans makes more sense, especially if you actually carry the rifles around. Most .338 cans are 1-2" longer and another 1/4"+ in diameter, 6-10 oz heavier and twice the price. The overbore apertures leave them about equal on muzzle suppression of .30 cal rounds, and sometimes a little worse for smaller .30s that don't have the exit pressure and gas volume to make use of the baffle features. There is most definitely such a thing as too big.

I actually don't have a .338 model, but I do make a 1.8" x 10" .375 cal model meant for the same type of 90-120 gr. charge cartridges. It takes my .375 RUM down to 137 dB, but on my .308, it's actually louder than my 1.5" x 9" Furtivus 30. On a 300 win mag, the difference is imperceptible to the shooter.

I just ordered a Griffin Sportsman Ultra Light 300. It's rated up to 300 RUM.

I'll let you know how it works out in a few months. :( :o

Thanks for all the replies.
