Suppressing 40SW 180gr 900fps

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

Suppressing 40SW 180gr 900fps

Post by 1911rocks »

I have Form 1s for 9mm, 45acp, 7.62, and 5.56. I'm waiting on a F1 to come back for a 45acp build. But, I see very little info on 40sw. I do not want the "10mm light" discussion. I want suppress one of my Pistol Cal ARs. I have one in 9mm, one in 40sw and one in 45acp. I've been down the 45acp suppression road and have tried the 45cal can on the 40sw and was not pleased. Any experience in either F1 or "off the shelf" Suppressors?

.40SW has MUCH more pressure than .45ACP. Therefore, you'll need something made for it.
You'll need the tighter boreholes and more effective baffles, than what the .45 offers.
You mention this will go on an AR upper. What barrel length? That will help others to reply.
Basically, many people will use a 9mm style can with simply larger holes to accommodate the larger diameter.
You will need to post exactly what you are hoping for. FRP? Low backpressure to exit the ejection port? Wet or Dry use?
All of these combine to give you your best answer.

whiterussian: Good post.

To answer some, if not all of your points.
1) All of my existing Cans are F1s. Some are Clipped 60deg cones, some "clipped Ms", one "K" style.
2) All are designed to shoot dry.
3) All have Inconel Blast Chamber Liners and Blast Baffles.
4) The rest of the baffles are 6AL-4V (ELI) Ti. Tube Length varies from 6-9" based on Caliber and application.
5) The Tubes are Grade 9 Ti as are the endcaps.
6) I've minimized Blast chamber volumes to reduce FRP.
7) The shorter cans (5.56 and shorter 7.62" Rifle application) are variations on the Gemtech M4-96C
8) The current Pistol cans are variations on the AAC-Evo 9
9) Bore diameters are 1.1886 x the Groove to Groove diameter. Yeah, I lose a wee bit of suppression with a 6.8 SPC II through a 7.62 can, but, I only like buying so many F1s.
9) All the Pistol Calibers are 4.5" barrels shooting heavy (subsonic) Bullets. Hence the 180gr 40sw.
10) All the Pistol Calibers are Blowback with 10.5oz Buffers, +10% Buffer Springs, and 15.4oz Bolts.

I've used the 45acp can on the 40sw AR Pistol and was not impressed. 119dB @ 3ft from shooters Right ear at same elevation. and projectile (180gr) at 927fps. (37def F, 30.6" Hg)
The same can on the 45acp was recorded at 114dB @3ft from Right ear, same elevation, projectile (239gr) at 897fps (37def F, 30.6" Hg)
The mystifying part is if Use my 45acp can on the same barrel length 9mm I'm in the 112dB class. The Bore Delta is substantially greater than the 45acp v 40sw bore ratio.
I reload and have standardized on CFE Pistol (for Pistol Calibers. I was using HS-6. but that was SOOOO dirty in Blowback guns.
Is the 40sw such a bastard child that no one addresses it's use in a suppressed platform?
