.338 Spectre

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

I am also curious, especially someone who is using a 9mm can with it, on an AR platform. Any reliability problems?

I think I'm gonna build one.

A 300gr projectile at 1000fps out of a Trident just seems like a fun thing to kill s--t with....

Isnt there something about the ,300 whisper having better performance at longer ranges than the ,338 ?

The muzzle V is fixed for both at 1000 fps
Then come the BC
Then come how god a terminal performance it has
Then how god it suppress

Edit

Hmm here is the calculations for a 240gn /,308 300gn/,338 matchking

the ,338 is better

so it comes down to precision terminal effectiveness and how well it suppress

Range Velocity Impact Drop ToF Energy Drift
0 1000 -1.5 0 0 533 0
100 976 0 18.35 0.31 508 1.08
200 955 -35.05 73.26 0.62 486 2.94
300 936 -108.1 166.16 0.93 467 5.91
400 918 -220.51 298.42 1.26 449 9.95

Range Velocity Impact Drop ToF Energy Drift
0 1000 -1.5 0 0 666 0
100 978 0 18.32 0.31 637 1.01
200 959 -34.88 73.02 0.62 613 2.69
300 942 -107.42 165.39 0.93 591 5.37
400 926 -218.83 296.62 1.25 571 9.02

Wow! This pic really got me excited. Those aren't 300 SMK's. I'm curious what bullet that in the pic? Looks to me like a super sonic round with a 9MM can!! I knew the Trident was bad ass, but damn, hope Henry sees this and can jump in and tell us how fast he's pushing that round through the Trident? I was a little afraid of a 9mm can for my .338. So I had a custom can built for it from JDW Manufacturing Company and could not be happier.

Henry's pics are what got me wanting a 338 Spectre. I will be using my EVO9 with TRIAD 3 lug. If I ever jump on the Ti-Rant I will use it as I am sure it will be more quiet.

it would be pretty cool to just turn a Remington 700 into a .338 Spectre gun and use it with the Trident.

That would probably be quieter than an AR. I haven't heard either of them in person though....

On Hairy78's AR you can turn the gas off so it's stupid quiet except for bullet impact.

oh yeah, duh.

pretty cool.

The only thing that has me hesitating about these cool little rifle bullets in pistol cases is ammo availability....

I guess I could just stockpile, of course, but reloading seems like a necessary investment for serious shooting with these type of rounds.

How are people mounting their Tridents on these guns? 3-lug mount with adapter from Tros, threaded on the end of the barrel with loc-tite?

Seems like that would be the way to go...

edit:

after doing some searching on this site, hairy78 said the following:

"Mine is a side charger, and I would have to warn you that the gas blowback is horrible. The way the upper is made allows an open slit right at your face, that when the gun cycles it blows alot of crap back at you. I haven't tried my barrel on another upper yet, but with my Trident, the gun is definitely quieter when shot with a t-shirt covering the left side of the upper. As far as decibels, I don't have a meter, but it is quieter to bystanders a couple of yards away than my 3.5" AR shooting 147's."

So, seems like a side-charger is not the way to go.

Wouldn't it be possible to cut off 30-06 brass at the shoulder, size, trim and turn the necks to make 338 Spectre?

I have a 338 whisper based on the 7mm BR which works just fine in a bolt gun. But it would be nice if I didn't have to upgrade to an ar-10 instead of just getting another ar-15 upper for it.

If I had to use a AR-10 receiver, I would want to go bigger than the
338 and try to figure how i could stuff the 510 whisper in it

That is why I was sad to see the 500 phantom fade away. http://feistyrooster.com/500phantom/index.html

I wonder if the 50AE case could be expanded ten thousands? It has a small enough rim to fit an AR-10 bolt. Think the case has enough room to fit 30 grains of H-110 and still grip a shallow seated Amax 750 grain bullet? The 300 grain load uses 30.5 grains of 296, and the bullet is seated deeper than an Amax needs to be I think. Worth some thought.

I deer hunt with my Spectre. The only thing I would change is the side charger. It is really nice for manual cycling, but in semi mode, powder residue and smoke blows out the side. Full auto is unbearable.

It sounds as quiet as my 16" 9mm AR with the can, and maybe actually a little bit quieter, in semi mode.

If I decide to add another Spectre to the stable it will be based off of a Savage 10 action, or CZ. Supposedly, it can use the same bolt as a 7.62x39, or 6.8 SPC. I have heard you can also make ammo out of 6.8 cases. I need to do some more research.

Starline has been producing 10mm Mag brass in limited quantities, over the last 2 years, and I have bought every batch of brass on Ebay, that I have seen.

Are you suggesting a method of expanding the entire case including the primer cup? We cant just leave the back of the case flopping around in an enlarged chamber

I have a suppressed 50ae and it already is capable of shooting the 500gr hornady xtp's, just not in a magazine ready length. At least then you have a projectile that will expand to an inch.
