Muzzle pressure comparisons in different 38 calibers

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Muzzle pressure comparisons in different 38 calibers

Muzzle pressure comparisons. (cross posted)

Some Quickload #'s for a TC Super 14 in different 38 calibers
Can an Evo-9 + Triad handle these?

UN-TESTED LOADS!!! Do not load w/o consulting a reloading manual and working up.
------------------------------------------------------------

Base line 9mm 147 gr load using 4.4 gr Unique (slow) 1028 fps Muzzle Pressure= 4,368 psi with a 4" barrel.

357 Maximum Subsonic load. 250 gr SP flat base 358" 5.8 gr unique 1035 fps 14" barrel MP=1302 PSI (I would say YES if stable, but that's a LONG bullet any yaw would destroy the Evo-9)

357 MAG Subsonic 180 XTP 4.5 gr Win 231 = 1028 FPS 14" barrel MP=877 PSI (I would say YES)

357 MAXIMUM FULL POWER 180 XTP 17.5 gr Win 296 (slow) 14" barrel FPS MP= 4099 PSI use with a Triad???? AAC comments? (still a little less muzzle PSI than a 9mm, but maybe not safe. That's a lot of powder)

Same 357 MAXIMUM 180 gr load in an 18" rifle barrel has a MP= 3111 psi vel 1663 FPS

357 Mag 158 gr 13 gr Win 296 1719 FPS 14" barrel MP= 2586 Should be Ev0-9 safe especially with a Triad Mount. almost 1782 psi less than 9mm 4" barrel pressure.

357 MAG 158 XTP gr handload with 7.5 gr unique (fast) 1421 FPS 14" barrel MP= 1688 should be Evo-9 safe MP is 2680 Less PSI than 9 mm in 4" barrel and not much powder.

Note: the pressure may be less but the volume may be more of the exiting gasses with loads with large weight charges..

I would love to hear From AAC in regard to this post.

The only loads I have shot through my Evo-9 have been 9mm and 38 spl.
Long distance, the next best thing to being there!

Very good info, thank you
I have been using a couple 9mm cans on my TC 10 inch
357mag barrel without any problems and its much quieter
than any 9mm semi pistol because of no action noise.
I handload 158 and 180 grn, 357mag brass at 1040fps

I have seen your posts ... NICE rig.

I have a 10" and 14" 357 MAXIMUM (try the AAC Trilug/TRIAD adapter you will be SHOCKED at the difference in accuracy and DB reduction) It also adds a sorta extra steel blast baffle/chamber WELL WORTH THE $$$!

Wet it's Very very quiet. (In my best Elmer Fudd accent)

Being able to load bullets to a MUCH longer OAL you may be able to use the 200 gr .358" rifle bullets in the MAG brass a and in the MAX the 250 gr bullets. Rate of twist and velocity... need to be carefully checked for stability..

I believe the Evo-9/Triad combination is being under rated/utilized by AAC. It may make a wonderful 357 mag rifle silencer. I am not to sure the full power MAXIMUM loads will pass AAC muster, but I don't know why they don't officially approve the Evo-9 TRIAD combination as a 357 mag rifle silencer or for use on a single shot pistol with barrels over X" long.

It would make it a multi cal/task can.

But selecting fast powders like 231 and unique the muzzle pressures are very low. The pressure may OK but I worry about VOLUME of gas with the larger gr loads. not worrying about a 7.5 gr Mag unique load but some of those 296 and h110 loads have a lot of powder.

What's your 158 sub load? I've shot a few 38 specials through my H&R/Trident and it's giggle inducing quiet. Want to try something with some more punch.

Can you use quick load to calculate muzzle pressure for m855a1 from a 20 and 10.5 barrel, 9mm +p+ 115 grain 5.2 barrel, 308 185 grain Berger at 2750 FPS from a 24 barrel, 30-06 berger at 2950 FPS from a 26 barrel, and the hottest possible 300 rum load from a 26 barrel?
Thanks in advance.

The short and dirty answer is NO, because the M855A1 bullet and powder are not in the data bases of the program. You might be able to get a close approximation using powder and bullets that are in the data base, but I wouldn't advise it. The M855A1 cartridge, in my opinion is a dangerous cartridge for civilians to be fucking with. It has significantly higher chamber pressure than the M855 (like 4000 psi higher) and that worries me. The Gov't doesn't give a s--t if a rifle blows up or a soldier or marine gets hurt in the process as they can get replacements for both. As for the other calibers, all is possible, assuming you know the load used.

I just wanted to load 200 projectiles, maybe less, of it for shtf and firing only a few times to develop a load. I’d like to know the muzzle pressure just to make sure it would be safe to run in a form 1 suppressor based on a stainless steel apogee tube and zmachineworx cones.
