New Remington SPS

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

That being said, standard Remington barrels are very marginal. You would be much better off putting the AICS money in a barrel and properly bedding a cheaper stock.

I know alot of guys think that the out of the box PSS/FN accuracy is normal, but I think you can do alot better.

For whatever reason in the "tactical" world the impact a stock makes has been grossly over exaggerated and a quality barrel underrated.
Well with that being said your much better off finding yourself an action somewhere and building a custom rifle to suit you. The SPS is going for about $600 in my area, there is no point in buying this rifle to change the barrel. The last Remington actions I saw went for around $300, add $100 for a good trigger and your up to $400 with no stock or barrel yet. What more do you want from this thing? I think the whole point of this is a turnkey rifle ready for a suppressor. I personally have a few off the shelf 700's with no more then trigger adjustment that will shoot moa with the right loads. That is probably more than enough for most people.
phoenix wrote:for someones first bolt action rifle (me), im sure as it sits with a decent scope it should be fine right?

or do you suggest putting it in a different stock? ive shot my friends varmit .223 R700 and like his stock he has (cant remember what it is).
I own rifles from several manufactures ( probably nowhere near as many as some other people on here might have ), and I'd be more then happy even with my cheap 700's. I have a Sportsman 78 which is just an el cheapo branded 700 made for Kmart I think it was, and it will out shoot every other out of the box rifle I have. Buy it, and shoot it next to your friends. See which one you like more, then make your decision. I don't own anything with a hogue stock on it but I've handled them, and I think they'd make an excellent hunting stock.

I have never run across $300 Rem 700 actions. I can find some used Sportsman 78s for under $400.

Well, I'll say this, after buying this $600 rifle, and putting a $250 scope on it W/about $50 dollars worth of rings & bases, I couldn't be happier with the results - My son & I went to the range yesterday and with a little tweaking on the scope, put it on the paper at a hundred, and got it shooting inch or so groups out of the box.
I'm sure I can tighten that up with a little effort - the barrel isn't broken in yet, it will settle in after a couple of hundred rounds. I personally can't wait to screw a suppressor onto this thing and see where the POI shift is and how much better it will shoot with one as opposed to W/O one - It was money well spent for a turnkey silenced rifle.
Thanks for thinking of this Robert - You did good!!

My comments were on whether it was rational to put this rifle in a $800-$1000 stock NOT whether this rifle was a good value at $600. Its a fine piece for the money and the way it comes.

Probably a dumb question, but what silencer does everyone plan on going with? I'm guessing the 762-SD.

Thanx for the range report. Fed Ex will be dropping mine off at my dealer on Tue. Starting to feel like a little kid waiting for my birthday or Christmas to get here. Going to kill me to have to wait until the weekend to get to the range. Have a vacation comin soon, should give me plenty of time to get it broken in

That is certainly a question that is up for debate. Here is my response:

I am going to do it. I have an AICS coming. If when I get it set up it does not shoot super well, then no, it was not a good decision. If it does shoot well, then yet it was. And worst case, I can move the AICS stock to another rifle and put an HS-Precision on this. So why not try?

Part of the good thing of a custom rifle is you can get a decent barrel profile and muzzle thread job, and a faster rate of twist. This already has those things. This also has a good trigger.

So what is it missing?

Well, the barrel is phosphated carbon steel rather than stainless or some exotic coating. What does that mean? It means it may last (I am making this up) 8000 rounds instead of 9000 rounds. So re-barrel it after it stops shooting. I have never worn out any 308.

... I wasn't even in the market for a Bolt Action rifle, but that price, I'm considering it.

That's cheaper than the Upper (with rear BUIS) on my AR, honestly... probably near the same price as the Lower receiver group between the MIAD, CTR, LMT Ambi Selector and KAC Ambi-Mag Release.

Near how much I'm going to spend on the Aimpoint I want.

I really am not going to be shooting precision, but I'd like to convert it to a removable magazine setup (I believe you're able too... also it's built on a Remington Action so parts are everywhere.), maybe a different stock.

Blow a few hundred on optics and rings and it's done.

That's a very attractive rifle for that price.

Bolt Action Remington 700 Action, with 1 in 10'' twist, 3.5 lb trigger, pre-threaded for $579? That's $100 and a Mossberg 590.

That's an over priced Glock.

It has me considering an Remington 700 and I had no desire to get a bolt action rifle.

I know. It is a no-brainer at the price, even if you didn't want one. It would cost $150 to get an existing barrel threaded, not counting two-way shipping. The thread-protector alone is worth the difference in price.

Ok since were talking. Scope, rings, base. I don't need a 25 power scope but something in 9-12 should suffice. The range I'm shooting is a 40 yard and a 200ish yard.

What's all out there that could keep this (total) under 800? Under 700?

For low cost, I would suggest:

EGW scope rail - $40.

Maybe some version of these Burris rings, but I don't like how they are so wide (not sure if you need medium or high):

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?p ... ber=156357

Or for even less money:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?p ... ber=494423
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?p ... ber=412445

I have not seen this scope, but it is $80 and well reviewed:

Might as well try it and tell is if you like it.

In my eyes, more bang for the buck - the level of soud reduction is worth the cost and the product is well made.
Everybody hs personal tasts in these things Diomed, I've swayed to your suggestions on occasion - this just happens to be mine.

RSR is now allocating this rifle. Email from my rep- "I had one allocated to me." Makes me think Remington might consider making more. Thats just me.

Remington Website: "Tactical Rifling 1 in 10" Lasered on Heavy Barrel"

Really? Rifling is now tactical...?? What is with that word? Sometimes you just have to laugh.

I'm sorry that sounded adversarial, and I didn't mean it that way.
I only meant that I have heard the Cyclone, and like the way it works - no offense intended.
