I just joined the forum because I want to make my first (and probably only) silencer purchase intelligently. I need a silencer because my shooting range is directly across the river from neighbors and sound carries well when I shoot in that direction. I am shooting down into a canyon and at least 30 degrees away from their direction, so there isn't a safety issue.

I shoot my .223 quite a bit, as well as a .260 Remington. Would a suppressor made for a .260 work well for a .223, .22 LR and .17 rimfire? Which brand and model suppressor would you suggest? How much reduction in sound suppression could be expected because of the caliber differences? Would a suppressor for a .223 work better for the two smaller calibers?

Welcome to the forum!

A good suppressor designed for a .308 should work wonders on your .260 and .223. There are many guys here who have had great results with such a setup.

A word of caution about the 22lr. You'll find a million threads addressing this issue here. A .22 is a filthy round that deserves its own suppressor, preferably a can that comes apart for cleaning. The molten lead will in time, fill up a suppressor, rendering it heavy and increasingly less effective.

There are a lot of good cans out there for both of your applications, but it would be helpful to know what kinds of rifles you have. Also, is your .17 an HMR or a Mach2?

As far as suppression goes, the .22, with subsonic ammo, will likely be quieter than a pellet rifle.

The .260, .223, and .17 will all be hearing-safe with a good can, but there is nothing that can be done to eliminate or reduce the sonic crack of the bullets. Sonic crack is fairly loud, but nowhere near as offensive as an unsuppressed gunshot.

My .260 is a switch-barrel on a 700 Remington. I have five barrels for the rifle, in .22-250, .243, .260. 7mm-08 and .308. I shoot the .260 more than the others, and am thinking of having another heavy .260 barrel made. I could have that one threaded for the suppressor. I suppose if I had all of the barrels threaded it would be quite a set!

The .223s are all Charles Daly bolt guns.

If the .22s are dirty, are the .17 rimfires cleaner? I would primrily use the .17 for hunting if it is legal, so I wouldn't fire it that much, not nearly as much as a .22. Would it function well with the .308 can? Which suppressor would you recommend?

My .17 is the HMR version. I have three, but would probably thread the CZ452 bolt gun.

The problem with .22's is that they are copper washed or plated, not copper jacketed like other rounds. That is what creates the lead/copper spray that gets messy. To my knowledge, and maybe someone could correct me if I'm mistaken, the .17 rimfires use regular style jacketed bullets.

The Tactical Innovations TAC16 is a take-apart can designed for .223. It should also work well for the .17's and .22's. It sells for $450.00, which is really inexpensive! It will not work for your .260 though.

For your .260, I'd reccomend Advanced Armament's Cyclone. It's a kickass screw-on .308 can that should work for all of the rounds you listed for your Rem700, should all your barrels have enough meat on them to be threaded.

So, the cheapest thing you could do is get the TAC16, and forget about suppressing your .260.

Or.

Get a good .308 can like the Cyclone for your .260 and .223, and an
additional can for your .22. If you go this route, I'd forget the TAC16 and go after a smaller, lighter, take-apart .22 can like an Advanced Armament Prodigy or an SWR Spectre. The Spectre can also handle your .17HMR.

Hope this helps,

Frank
