Re-engraving serial numbers
I've got a M4-2000 that i've burned the finish off and refinished a few times. Each time i strip the paint off with sandpaper, and it's gotten to the point where it's kind hard to see the serial and manufacturer. Should I re-engrave the manufacturer and serial? Also, do i need to send it into AAC for that, or can I have a local engraver handle it?

Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
Sad to say, you can't alter the serial number, that's a big no no.

Stop before you have to destroy and buy a new silencer. Sand paper really, glass bead blast would be the appropriate thing to use.

David is correct.David Hineline wrote:Stop before you have to destroy and buy a new silencer. Sand paper really, glass bead blast would be the appropriate thing to use.
Also keep in mind that AAC can NOT replace your suppressor for you on that tax stamp, nor will they remark your current suppressor for you.
Sandpaper is bad..... on serial numbers.

Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
You mean you couldn't just take a diamond pen and go over the serial and deepen it a bit..Sorta like just cleaning out the paint kind of thing? Legally of course..

Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
Nope. If the serial number becomes damaged the can has to be destroyed and replaced with a new one. If the serial number is still readable then your ok, just dont sand it anymore.

Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
You can add a second identical serial number somewhere else, just leave the original in tact.

Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
Even glass bead blasting will erode it over time. Before opting to use any kind of abrasive, try a solvent. Acetone, MEK, or something that will cut through the paint but stop at the metal.David Hineline wrote:Stop before you have to destroy and buy a new silencer. If you're taking enough metal off to remove the SN, what is it (or will it be) doing to the structural integrity of the can? Something you might want to consider....
Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
Dude the serials only need to be 3 thousandths deep..You got bigger problems with your can if you can't remove that much..

Re: Re-engraving serial numbers
The serial numbers and company info is nice and sharp on my M4-2000, but the "Front Toward Enemy" is very shallow. Mostly in the center where the arrow is. I was thinking of going tan with it, but it might cover up the lettering. Not sure if this is all done at the same time or not. Maybe some cans have shallower marking in spots.

Re-engrave it somewhere else on the can.BadassWeakling wrote:I've got a M4-2000 that i've burned the finish off and refinished a few times.
