Myth Busters silencer program.

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

As a kid, I used to remove the copper cup from the base of tracers and ignite the tracer element. Nice red glow for a few seconds. 8)

Attention: Knowledge of guns and/or ammo is known to the state of California to cause cancer. Therefore such knowledge is highly regulated in order to protect the citizens. If you encounter guns or ammunition within California, you're required by law to make s--t up on the spot.

Obviously Tracers dont work that way, but does the incendiary round? That is all I could think of.
No, incendiary rounds usually have ball powder or a small amount of other pyrophoric material in the head of the bullet under the copper jacket. The friction from the impact initiates the reaction and when the jacket frags the material is thrown. A few designs use a primary and secondary exposive but typically it is only used in larger calibers.

I hope Mythbusters doesn't frag the science and laws pretaining to silencers. I know from 2nd hand information that alot of the explosives episodes. You have to remember that the show is 90% intertainment, 10% science.
There is no problem which cannot be solved by a suitable application of high explosives. --

I saw a pretty thick book the other day in Barnes & Noble that pertained to the development of pistols from centuries ago and all the way up to modern guns. Lots of good illustrations, the book detailed hundreds of different pistols.

And then I get to the H&K Mk23 w/ Silencer. The description detailed how silencers are quiet but not preferred for non "special operations" usage because the silencer slows the bullet down to subsonic speeds. The book immediately became garbage to me.

Funny thing is I have heard that rumor for years regarding silencers and now its in publication.

maybe the insurance company is worried about how much more deadly a pistol becomes when a "silencer" is attached.... we all know from the hollywood movies that threading on a silencer instantly converts the bullet into a heat seeking missle that only hits heads and hearts without anymore noise than a mousefart.

This is probably how alot of these "myths" get started. I saw this response about suppressors from a non firearms web site.
This is the post.

(We had the xxxxxxx suppressors for our M4'a in Iraq... With 5.56 FMG they aren't Hollywood quiet, but are quiet enough that your ears feel fine after shooting a few mags. Efficiency goes down after about 3-4 30rd mags and are completely shot after 200 rds. )

I asked this question.

I'm not clear what you mean by efficiency goes down and completely shot after 200 rounds.

RonA

This was the reply.

Well, like most suppressors, after so many shots the baffles inside started getting damaged from the shock of each round. The more you shoot them the louder it gets... most suppressors have a rough amount of rounds that they can handle before they start getting noticeably louder. With the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX we noticed them getting louder after about 90-120 rounds. As far as I know they don't make a suppressor that lasts forever... So after about 200 rounds they didnt have much silencing effect anymore and you either had to get it rebuilt or swap it for a new one.

Hope that helps...

I would laugh, but this kind of crap is annoying.

Guessing he didn't actually run into silencers out there and heard about them from an elder at some point.

By the number of stupid assed bitching many viewers do on the show when one of their "pet" myths turns out to be full of s--t, I will be interested in seeing what the fallout of the silencers on will be. I'm sure there will be all sorts of know it alls claiming that either they did not use the right silencer, or not a good one, or how hollywierd can't be fake type of s--t.
