Black Oxide and 17-4 pH stainless steel question

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

Black Oxide and 17-4 pH stainless steel question

Post by Queso Grande »

Help me out with this, I am a little confused about grades of SS. I want to black oxide something that is 17-4 pH and want to know if it will work. I want to use the Caswell cold kit.

Is the 17-4 pH just a harding it doesn't match up with a grade on Wiki .

Any info would be helpful.

it is about 17% chromium and 4% nickel, hence the "17-4"

I don't know about the blackening kit, but i would assume it works the same for most to all grades of stainless

17-4PH is very good stuff. It's a precipitation hardening stainless steel used in medical, aerospace, ect. I highly doubt the cold black kit you've got will work on your parts though.

These guys can blacken 17-4: http://www.rcindustries.com/
