Armoured Jeeps

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Armoured Jeeps

Post by LavaRed »

So I finally got down to taking pictures of my '79 and '81 armoured Jeep Wagoneers together. The '81 is the darker one away from the wall. It's also the one I show the door and control board to:

This is the glass I assembled and tested for them:

9mm AP from a BHP fired @ 5mts./15ft. range:

7.62x51mm AP from FAL and then 12 gauge rifled slug from HS Police Shotgun, both fired @ 5mts./15.ft. range:

Thickness and composition of the glass. I went double on the actual vehicle:

Enjoy and please feel free to critique.

Thanks for watching,

Nope, they're rather transparent. They do look a bit deep, but not that much.

About US$4,000 so far. Remember I have a third one ('92) sitting at my farm in derelict state, but the engine runs perfectly, so I still have to restore that. And the '79 one was with my family way before my time, and the upgrades were more costly, so idk abt their cost.

@jimmym40a2: It would be my pleasure :) .

So what does this have to do with silencers?

About as much as your post, I'm sure you could ask a mod to move it if you feel like being a D-bag.

Lava carry on and great work. I wish I could get my hands on one!

You see that my post has the word "silencer" in it. So I guess it has 100% more relevance to the forum then this thread does.

It is what it is. Before you know it, people will start talking about their cats, i-phones, kids and hump back whales.

I don't think we're in that kind of danger. As long as you post pics of something that got shot I think we're ok...the Mods will move it if they feel they need to. 8)

My father had a 1983 Jeep just like those... except his was dark red as I recall. I can't believe how good of a condition they are for the age. That sure takes me back.

That thing would climb a near vertical incline.

The one I recently armoured was dark red originally, but the paint was somewhat deteriorated, so I had it stripped and colour matched as close as possible to the 79's colour.

They have really resilient engines.

Thanks for all the support guys! :D

Nice Lava !

so what do you have in the doors and regular panels ?
I'we seen some really good results with dual layers lightweight steel, like offset in 3 layers with a 1 to 2 cm clear space inbetween..

Actually, I have just that. 3 1/4" thick sheets of ballistic steel, spaced abt 1/2" apart, plus some spall liner (ballystic nylon-fiberglass or aramid panels, depending on what I could scrounge up that was serviceable). Some parts where I couldn't fit 3 sheets or strips I just made do with 2, but that will still stop most threats.

I couldn't get any more modern materials mostly because I got mine from scrap. But I tested everything thoroughly :) .

Did you upgrade the suspension for the increased weight, or is the stock components suitable for it?

That is a great question about the suspension.

As I recall my Father's jeep was something like 10 miles per gallon of gas. (4.25 Kilometers per liter)

How thirsty are those beasts with all of that weight?

They're doing between 10 and 20 km/h. But of course the carburetors and motors have been very well-adjusted.

The suspensions have been upgraded. Special shock absorbers, stronger leaf springs, and torsion bars added to the rear axles.

Yes indeed. The most the average person like me has to fear in Guatemala is getting their cellphone stolen at gunpoint while in the car. But this tends to happen to people who flash their cash with expensive brand new cars and Blackberries. My family tries to live very spartanly: We don't have any cars newer than 10 years old, we always buy used, and my cellphone is a very old Motorola C122. My greatest fear is that I might get caught in a crossfire one day when they're nailing a drug lord or something, and stray rifle bullets could hit my vehicle.

Just the other morning my bedroom window was jammed shut and wouldn't open. When I finally got it open, I found the separated steel core and jacked of a fresh 7.62x39mm round had bulged the steel center frame and stopped there, coming in at about a 30 degree angle. There are no tall buildings nearby (within 800 yards) in that direction. Therefore, it was a stray bullet on the final leg of it's parabola. I was s--t-scared.
