Help choosing 556 can

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Help choosing 556 can

Post by Josh-L »

I have a need for a 556 can to go on an AR15. I have previously owned an AAC M4-1K but traded it because the added length and weight weren't worth it to me at the time. But because of a new assignment at work I need to suppress my rifle again. My criteria, in order, is as follows...

Weight
Length added
Under $1k
Noise reduction

I've been out of the silencer game for a while so I don't know what's out there. I've been looking hard at the Ops M4-S lately though so that's the weight/size I'm looking at. I'd appreciate any help. Will be going on a 10.5 or 11.5 inch barrel. I don't care if it's QD or thread on.

Thanks for looking at my criteria. That thing is 8 inches long and 22 oz. I'm looking for something half that.

M4-2k? A few ounces heavier than 11 ounces, but it is a great all around can and shorter than the m4-1k

this^ m42000, 17ish ounces. cant be beat for sound or durability. 6.5" total length but only about 4" added to weapon. if any of this is too much you are not asking for anything realistic.

OP- if sound is truly your least important criteria, then AAC MINI4 or Surefire MINI.

He does not care about mounting method, so the Ranger-3 would be good.

Your only options for a commercially available can, given your criteria, are going to be a Ranger 3 or maybe an ops m4-s. I'm not aware of anything else that could come close with your cost requirement.

The Ranger should weigh around 13-15 oz and around 5.5" added to length beyond the muzzle. It will be quieter than the ops can and lighter than any quick attach can, including AAC's Mini4.

The Ops Inc M4-s looks like it goes back over the barrel (reflex) so I'm not sure it would work with an 11.5" barrel and I know it won't work with a 10.5". Also, the weight they list doesn't include the weight of the required flashhider/mount, which you can typically expect to add about 4+ oz to the published weight. The total weight would be something more like 15-16 oz.

Another option might be a custom-made suppressor, but I don't know who to recommend and haven't any idea of the cost.
