Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
Anyone ever killed a hog with a suppressed subsonic .22?
Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
Nope.
I wouldn't try it either. Simply not enough mass or ass to get the job done.

Haven't done it nor would I ever try, even point blank is going to be inhumane.BlakeJ wrote:Anyone ever killed a hog with a suppressed subsonic .22?
Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
I've seen video of guys taking down small hogs with a .177 pellet rifle.
It falls in the realm of possible but not sensible for me.

My great grandfather slaughtered pigs with a Smith and Wesson K-22 Masterpiece (which I now have.) But that was point blank range, aimed right at the sweet spot for doing so. You can kill a lot of things with .22, but it doesn't mean it's the humane way to do so.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
I've done it many times. In fact several hundred times in the last 6 months. Works like a champ and the hogs go down just as fast as with a 45acp. However these are trapped hogs so I'm dispatching them at a max of about 3 feet.
Would I take a suppressed 22lr out to hunt hogs?
NO WAY!
In fact when I am dealing with them in a trap I always have a heavy backup(45acp or 12ga.) on hand. Never know when an untrapped hog in the brush might decide to intervene.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
As with any sort of hunting shot placement is critical. Knowing trajectories and your abilities are paramount to hunting anything with a suppressed subsonic 22LR. I have been able to hit squirrels in the head consistently with a subsonic silenced 22LR platform for decades at ranges up to 90-100 yards, and hitting hogs in the strategic kill zone is just as easy, but don't try it long range. Under 50 yards is best.
I would not SET OUT to kill hogs with a suppressed subsonic 22LR, I would rather use a subsonic 300BLK, but its considerably louder. When one comes by while hunting with the 22, I kill it as dead as a hammer. I have done it plenty of times.

Very true! Just lucky to have lived through it.......so far.
Yep, if you don't place your shot correctly it really doesn't make much difference what you're shooting. I've heard it said that more deer are probably killed with 22lr in Texas(illegally) each year than all other calibers combined. Can't prove it but it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.John Titsworth wrote:As with any sort of hunting shot placement is critical. Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
I have been on several hog killings in the late fall, all were in a pen and a 22 rifle was placed as close to the sweet spot as could be. All but a few went down but if they move just as you pull the trigger you might have a story to tell your grand kids. Stay safe and try to do it right. As far as in the open No Sir you may get more then you can handle. Always carry a first aid kit with needle and thread and some shine to clean out the wounds you may get.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
I've used a suppressed 22 LR to finish deer. Works well.
Have always used an unsuppressed 40 or 45 to clear traps. Usually have the old Mossberg 590 with me then too. I tend to prefer that fella for trailing up wounded piggies if I have to do that. Hasn't been required too often as I tend to heavy gun pigs. Will be different with the 6.8 and 300 BLK.
Neither is quite the same as a .308 or a 9,3x62.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
There was a guy hunting them with a 22 air rifle on sportsmans channel a while ago. My grandfather only took deer with a 22lr his whole life. That all said I would not unless I was hungry and all I had was a 22.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
Raising my hand slowly, as the gasps from the crowd override any common decency that may prevail from what I'm about to say.
Hell yea, I've shot hogs with subsonic .22's. Not only have I shot them with subs, I've also killed them with subsonic .22's. Not only have I killed them, I've killed each and every one of them. And to top it off, these are wild hogs out having a wild time. Not some penned up, corn bred critter shot at point blank range. And yes Virginia, these are hogzillas, majority being big ole boars with sacks resembling medium sized oranges.
My secret ingredient....Winchester Dynapoints or Wolf Match. Not too mention an Aguila or two. And 98.3% of the time, just one single shot.
And the naysayers and banshees react and rejoice by saying 'sure, you killed them with a shot placed precisely behind the ear'. And I say 'sometimes, if I so desire'. But mostly its the old fashioned boiler room broadside shot I wait for. And the crowd erupts with delirious foot stomping laughter that would make the most seasoned comedian saunter into obscurity
Seriously folks, hogs are not the mythical beast that the media and f uckoff naysayers make them out to be. If you can take a deer with a .22, then you can take out a hog with a .22. They won't drop in their tracks with a lung shot subsonic .22 but once their lungs fill up with blood they have a tendency to expire. And that usually occurs within 50 to a hundred yards of where they were hit.
Omfg... does that sound familiar. My old R3mmy 700 (put your caliber here) sometimes does the same thing. Shi-it yea, I've shot them with ballistic tips in the lungs. Sometimes they run a couple of yards, and sometimes they get pumped up and can go the full monty.
Statistically, I do just a little bit better than a bow n arrow with rimfire subs. I try to keep my shot within 50 yards. Probably the longest kill shot was at around 60 yards. The biggest drawback to using rimfires is if your doing your killing in the hood' or in the brush/woods....they leave absolutely no blood trail. Luckily, my backporch overlooks a scenic marked off pasture with a couple of nice acorn producing trees.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
I have done it one time, 40 yards DRT. Neck shot with RWS SSHP's. I would do it again if a similar shot presents it self. Hogs are a pest and vermin, any means to kill one is OK by me.
Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
You got that right . . .Pests they are. I consider them the enemy of the state. Just from my personal standpoint, they have torn up my fencing, decimated my gardens, cratered out my pastures, made a mess out of my stock tanks, even knocked over staked in deer feeders
Ironically, it was sorta by accident that I learned that subs kill them just as well as anything else.
I was doing so well killing them with headshots that the buzzards couldn't keep up. I'd chain them to the ole Kubota and drag them as far as I could from the house. Still, in the summer heat, they would emit a godawful stench from a long ways off.
Anyways, A big ole boar came into my lighted field of view one muggy night, (40 yards), got the bright idea that perhaps I'll just plug him in the chest and let him run off to my neighbors property and die, heh heh, you know, a neighborly thing to do.
Loaded one Dynapoint aimed for the area slightly above his stubby little elbow, thwack, sure enough, that pig took off into the dark of the night like he wasn't hit...I figured, not my problem anymore and off to bed I went.
Looked out my patio doors next morning and I see that big ole pig ~75 yards from where I shot him, already being worked over by the buzzards
As far as I was concerned, it was just a fluke, pure luck or accident that thing expired so quickly from a sub to the lung area. Not so.......Over the years, I've had the opportunity to kill many more pigs this way.

Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
I shot and killed a baby pig (~20 lbs) at around 45 yards with subsonic .22 out of a 16" barrel. Right through the eye and dead right there.
I am an avid rabbit hunter so I can easily pick off their heads at 65 yards or less with subsonic ammo. Every condition was ideal, sitting still, shot from a rest and no wind. If there were any wind I definitely would have turned the .223 on him.
Best pork you will ever bbq!

The comments about experience, scars, wisdom gained thereby... all that made me think of a line I've always liked:

They were rooting up my yard, Didn't mean to kill it, Sniff sniff
But sure tasted good on my grill

It would take me a thousand shots with a slingshot. But dang good shooting man! If a man had a fast twist for the 60 gr aguilla? Anybody with any experience with them on hogs?
Re: Subsonic .22 lr on a hog?
shot one a while ago with a 60gr SSS from 65yds in the head dropped it weighed about 100lbs

I like the wt of the 60 gr but my barrels will only get it to about 20 yds without going shotgun. The 10 twist barrels are about as much as a 10-22.
