suppress a AK74?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

suppress a AK74?

Post by bp_968 »

Due to ammo prices I was considering picking up a WASR2 (AK74) and shooting some 5.45x39. Has anyone tossed a M4-2000 or anything similar on one? Probably would be loud but why not if you can thread it for 40-50 bucks.

Any reason not to?

I would do it, but only if it shot .223 in a AK74.

I just hate having all the different calibers i have now.

Why wouldn't you just shoot steel cased Wolf and do a little extra maintenance and cleaning on your "beater" AR-15?

Its 180-200 a case? shoot 4000 rounds of ammo and you just got the rifle for free. 8)

Cause it is not NATO pressure. It would be like running your Porsche on 84 Octane from Mexico.

If Wolf was normal velocity but only had the downside of not being reloadble -- fine. But it is much worse than that. It does not meet the spec for speed.

Hey I am not saying to shoot match grade ammo all the time. Just M193 or something but I won't use worse.

I've suppressed my SAR2 and am really happy with the results. I say go for it, mine was from 2002 and had an unthreaded barrel that happily took 1/2x28 and now sports a fast attach flash hider.

This is a probably irrelevant nitpick, but using low octane gas in a turbocharged car is exactly like using pistol powder in a rifle. It burns way too easily and quickly to be able to reasonably control the combustion process.

Using dirty, low velocity ammo is more like running pig rich. You lose power and you get soot all over the turbine blades, exhaust and rear bumper. And if you run rich enough it gets rid of the lubrication on the cylinder walls, eventually eroding them and damaging the rings.

Is the 5.45x47 ammunition that much cheaper? The stuff I found was only slightly cheaper and not worth the effort.

Maybe it's time to learn how to use a Dillion reloading press and load your own mil spec 5.56.

Of course, you could always use 22lr for general training or plinking. I've been looking at the Keuhl upper myself.

Already reload and have lots of components. I was just curious about the SAR2.

5.45x39 is running 124.95$ per 1080 online.

I had an AK-74 but I got rid of it. Sure the ammo is a little bit cheaper but by the time you buy mags, ammo, the gun and all the other little crap you need you could have gotten a few thousand rounds of decent quality .223 ammo. I figured I would run my AR until it fails on me in some way and so far I haven't been able to run it hard enough to hurt it. Sit down and figure out how much everything is going to cost you for the AK-74. I don't know about you but I like to get all the little stuff like slings, cleaning kits, etc. for a new gun and that stuff adds up quick. Once you have a figure ask yourself if you'd rather spend that money on a new gun or just buy lots of ammo with it and practice, practice, practice...

¿So when is the last time you bought 84 octane in Mexico?

There are two grades of unleaded gasoline in Mexico, 87 octane and 92 octane.

Hind sight is 20/20.

To bad I didn't buy the WASR2 back then. The rifles are now 350-400$ for the WASR2 or 650$ for the Polish AK74s and the ammo is still 130$ for 1080rnds.

Lets compare that to the wolf .223 thats now 260$ per 1000$ when you can find it and the 5.45x39 is the russian version of M193 (not crappy low velocity wolf).

For every 10,000 rounds of wolf (2600$) I could buy 21,600 rounds of 5.45x39 (2600$)

Sadly if you compare rifles of similar build quality (yugo ak47 VS polish AK74) (430$ VS 650$) and then compare ammo prices (762x39=179$ a case and 5.45x39=130$ per case) if you buy 2 rifles it doesn't get cheaper to go the 5.45x39 route until you purchase over 11,000 rounds or so. Still a tempting idea (simply because I could use my M4-2000 on it as opposed to a 762x39 which I cant use my m4-2000 on).

5.45x39 really is the last of the truly inexpensive mil surp ammo (IMHO). Heck, even 7.62x54R is starting to get silly!

I am getting two krinks made in 5.45 so I can suppress them. I will give a range report in a few months. its gonna be about a 5000 dollar project if I guestimate correctly. should look and run great though.
