Cut'n down a Ruger MKII, what length?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Cut'n down a Ruger MKII, what length?

Post by GatoMontes »

So I got me a pretty worn Ruger MKII 5.5" Bull that I was looking to get threaded and decided that shortening the barrel might not be a bad idea as well. I would really like to cut down on the weight, as with a silencer the balance will be effed as all the weight will be at the front. Right now I'm thinking 4", but I really don't know what length would be the best compromise between weight savings, keeping bullets subsonic and also maintaining reliability.

Also, not interested in the Tactical Solutions offerings; more money than I'd like to spend on this firearm.

4-4.5 is fine and they run fine at 3".

I have a 3, 4 1/4, and 16". the 16" needing standard vel te be SS.

16"?! WTF, and here I'm complaining about a measly 5.5 inches. What's the weight on that thing?

4" would be fine - bulk HV 22 LR wallyworld ammo seems to stay subsonic up thru 4 1/2 inches in my experience.

Only 3.3 LBS with the 22/45 frame on it. It's a "fan favorite".

That's what I wanted to hear. To me it doesn't matter if the firearm will be carried or just a range toy, balance can really make or break a gun for me. First handgun was a Ruger GP100 with a six inch barrel; might as well have been a boat anchor for how heavy it was. Traded for a four inch and been happy ever since.

What stock setup is that Emilio? I faintly remember those advertized a couple years back before they hit the market, or maybe I'm thinking of something different all together? Either way that's a sweet piece! :D

Do it! Should be easy! Barrel comes of by hand and self indexing. If I was in a SBR state it would have the can at the barrel nut. Still quite short and light as is.

My MKII is at 3.5. It runs perfectly with everything I put through it, CCI MM, CCI Blazer, CCI SV, RGB, CCI Tac and Win 555

Emillo,

A big disadvantage to the RCU is the 10 round mags. I was making a 200 round drum for my MKIII but the ergonomics did not work well without a bi-pod. It's not possible on the new 3.5" barrel.

It would be sweet on the RCU. He're a pic of the drum with M&P 15-22 tower.

I'm now seriously considering building a 3lb MKIII carbine. I'll build a MKII tower and test. If the mag catch can hold the weight of the drum, I'll think about a MKII integral carbine with a better stock.
If it doesn't splatter, shatter, burst or explode, it's not worth shooting.

Very cool. :D I wish I could have full auto here!

I have "Tacticool" 22's that all use the same mags and drums However sometime it nice to have a very light carbine that is slim with nothing sticking out and I can carry many mags in my pocket and mag change quickly. (30 rounds take up less room then in big mags) Also, can take a pistol and use same mags.

Infact, I'm tired of having too many types of mags so I now keep it simple when buying /building guns so they all can share!

This is why I build this last night. :P :P :P   It a wonderful thing!

Emilio,

Do you like it that upper?

I am going to cash in my Shrike deposit for one (I am close - I am fighting with the "high capacity mag rule in MA - and it honestly isn't worth it at this point - if I really want a belt fed, I will buy a real one).

I would get an extra barrel and cut it right at the nut.

It's a 220 round American 180 drum with a modified bazooka bros adapter that I combined with a 10 round S&W M&P 15-22 magazine. It holds 203 rounds. It works very well.

Very nice set up, I would love to have one of those myself. You could squirrel hunt for a month and not have to reload. :D

I love it, light and handy, well made, easy to clean ( barrel comes out). Accurate . If your pistol reliable then it reliable. Everyone who shots it love it. needs to be threaded and adapter for the skinny barrel.

The Shrike is neat though! Still behind on orders I see.

Do they still make the RCU? I went to Ares' website and don't see it listed. That would make for an excellent SBR, regardless of mag capacity.

Still deciding on barrel length. I read that at 3.5 inches things started getting finicky, but if all you say otherwise I'm starting to consider under 4.
