And the HTG Patent goes to....

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Gentlemen,

Please help me lessen my ignorance. What is the HTG patent and why is it important?

Thank you!

The HTG Patent is the patent that HTG used in their cans.

The previous owner failed to meet the agreement with the patent holder and the patent was put up for sale.

Someone has now bought it and will be using the HTG patent in their silencers, under their name or HTG's.

Is it important to anyone here? No, but the forum still talks about it.

Meh. Darn near anything can be patented; but that doesn't make it good. Just keeps everyone else from making it.

His brakes are OK but the cans from George/HTG ain't all that. Black Rain likely overpaid.

Quiet in many cases but with insanely small bores (sometimes a few thou over bullet diameter!) - which in my opinion is the reason the were quiet. If you open the bores to something normal to minimize risk of a baffle strike, then I they would get louder.

They do get louder when you open the bore. I have a Universal 2 and the bore was ridiculously tight, I opened it up to more industry standard diameter and it got A LOT louder, loud enough that I recored it with K to make it quiet again.

Some of their rifle cans are pretty nice though.

I have no doubt that whoever bought the patent(not publicly disclosed by the owner as far as I know) paid too much for it.

They will no doubt still be under the watchful eye of George Vais as the previous owners were as well.

I forget what bore I measured, but I think it was a 45 Auto pistol can with a 0.458 bore when others would use more like a 0.510 bore. If you make almost any can with a bore that tight, it will do well on sound tests. But the military would never buy it because it would not likely hold up to long term testing.
