Ruptured Surefire Socom 556

Post by briansp82593 »

This thread is kind of an AMA and a PSA to guys with M16's at their disposal.

Last 4th of July, I broke my Surefire Socom 556.

Let me first state, had I actually read the manual for it, this might not have happened. It says to not exceed a hundred and twenty rounds in a string. I fired 181 rounds before I realized the suppressor had ruptured.

10.5 Inch LMT upper rec
SF3P flash hider
Colt M16 Lower

Right after inserting the 7th magazine and closing the bolt, a friend called a cease fire. He noticed the top of my suppressor had some extra venting :?

Gun was so hot, the 181st round was a cook off in the chamber (in a safe direction)

The outer tube had ruptured in three places and had a slight bulge at the top. Surprisingly, I didn't notice anything unusual from the back side of the rifle. Didn't notice an increase in sound. We let the suppressor cool off and removed it without too much trouble, it did take two hands though.

Sent a picture into Surefire, the response from them was they would replace my suppressor with a new one at 50% of MSRP and obviously a new tax stamp. While I don't necessarily disagree with their stand on this matter, It didn't help the sour taste in my mouth from ruining the can in the first place. But lets be honest, I did burn this thing up AND pushed it beyond what was stated in the manual.

I opted to keep my can, as it still functioned as "normal" on light semi auto use. Finally just got around to getting this thing "repaired". I had a sleeve machined to fit and was pressed on with a hydraulic press. Interference fit. It is snug. It is not welded on at this time.

All of the 212 and socom cans have internal venting as seen in the first picture, I added the arrows to show the direction of heat and gas. There is an expansion chamber between the internal stack and the exterior tube. This is where the heat built up and the tube gave out. Prior to this session of abuse, I probably have had less than 1000 rounds through it.

Now on to the pictures.

Unfortunate experience. But thanks for showing great detail in the pics.
The photo of the 3 slits and 4 bleeder holes in the baffle are very instructive.
A slight twist to the grooves like some flashhiders. And extra surface area to quench the flame.
I wonder if the visible pitting was there b/f the mag dumps? Or just b/c of the metal softening after heating.

Good job on the oversleeve! What material did you choose?

Next time you decide to burn out a can you need to invite me. What kind of friend are you anyway?

first I want to say that is a pretty good fix on your part very smart. second for the cost of the surefire cans you would think they would perform better than that and that's not even including your low round count. Now I completely get their stance since you didn't follow the what the manual says its pretty nice that they offered you a new can for half off.

Great write-up. Kudos. I dislike when this kind of thing happens but I love the photos and documentation.

There's a saying in the military that describes this situation: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

What a strange place for it to rupture. Add to this the
' ... cut along the dotted line ...' circumferential line
the first thought that arose was that there was an
inherent weakness in the can's manufacture.

Long ago I purchased a .45 Marlin Camp gun.
After firing two boxes of .45 ACP military I heard
a very loud twang as a piece of metal hit the tin
roof out doors. Buddy next said that the sight had
blown off. Huh!

The front of the barrel where the sight screws were
drilled had split from the back screw to the front one
and a split like yours appeared. iPhoned dealer ASAP
and told to bring it back post haste.

Immediately got my money back. Before handing it over
close look strongly suggested that the 3rd world hell hole worker
had drilled the holes almost all the way into the barrel - POS.

Marlin never responded after a few attempts to find out their
analysis.

So I sympathize.

Have you considered sleeving that end with a SS band shrunk fit?

Keep us apprised.

Good luck.
