Gents,

Need advice for the best semi auto 308 rifle to be used with the omega suppressor solely for hunting. Want light weight and handling and obviously accuracy. Getting mixed feedback as Browning says "no go with the BAR." And FNAR is about same gas system. Not a big AR fan in comparison to traditional rifle handling but looks like it may be my only option if I want suppressed. I'm told there is lots "blowback" with the 308 and that I should get gas piston design rather than stoner design. i'm told adjustable gas always better if suppressed.

I want light weight and handling. Must be semi auto. Need experienced advice please.

thanks

update-- After further study, I guess my options are DPMS G2 hunter or S&W M&P 10. Opinions ?

Love the Browning BAR best but called Browning and they said a Suppressor would destroy it. The system can't handle backpressure very long and gets very dirty. That was my original plan. UGH !!

If you do not mind Modern Sporting Rifles, how about a SCAR 17S in .308 Win.? It seems to be very accurate and very reliable.

If you want 308 performance out of a very light semi auto you should consider an AR-15 chambered in 300 OSSM. it has nearly identical ballistics as .308, slightly better actually, and it fits in an AR-15 instead of an AR-10. This is a very niche cartridge and ammo is expensive, but if you really want an ultralight semi silenced .30 cal for hunting, it could be what you seek.

The Remington 750 was much like the BAR in 308, a light semi-auto hunting rifle. Here's a used one on Gunbroker with scope, min bid $505. Remington stopped making it a few years ago, probably when they came out with the R-25 GII (almost same as DPMS GII).

Like the BAR, the Remington 750 ran well when clean, but is prone to problems with a dirty chamber (so it means shooting suppressed might make it a jam-o-matic). The Remington 750 used an action spring system (probably no adjustment). Remington still makes the 7600, which is a pump rifle in .308.

A stoner type (DI) AR in .308 works well when you have an adjustable gas block on it, to dial down the gas with a suppressor on it.

I stumbled across an M&P10 at a price I couldn't pass up, and couldn't be happier with it. Mine was very basic so I swapped out the handguard and trigger, and put a qd break for my omega. I think now they come with Magpul furniture though. It's still very light for the platform. If you want an accurate semi auto rifle that you don't want to break the bank on, I'd recommend it. As far as blowback, I find it to be comparable, or even less, than my 556 AR.

The BAR can be fitted with a silencer. At least they do that here in Norway, the distributor even claims it to be one of few semis that can be suppressed. The gas system must of course be adjusted, this voids the factory warranty for any faults that can be attributed to the gas setting.

A H&K 91 or clone is one of the best ever made.

The Roller lock system makes for light recoil and super fast follow up shots.....er the reason you wanted a semi right!

No problem adding a suppressor plus you can get 5rnd mags and a bayonet to stab squirrel and PETA nuts.

Just get a 16" AR-10 with a light weight barrel and be done. It's the best system out there to run suppressed.

I've got a traditional gas AR, in 308, and I run it suppressed all the time. The only instance where blow-back is a serious issue is running high volume of fire, like you would in a running gun-fight, or competition environment. NOT an issue with a hunting AR-10, where you'll most likely be taking 1 or 2 shots.

Hopefully he already decided and bought a rifle since he was asking for advice more than 2 years ago and last logged in over a year ago. :)
