Subsonic coyote round that can reach 200 yards

Post by Shamrock-MP »

Is there a subsonic round that can easily kill a Coyote at 200 yards? I am trying to figure out if there is a sub round that can reach that far, still have plenty of energy for a clean kill but not have a huge drop to deal with. Thanks for any suggestions.

200 yards is pretty far . I shoot paper with 300 blk that far. Won't be a fast or clean kill but it would die.

I figured that a +180 grain rifle bullet will a little to heavy to travel that distance without a +20" drop and a pistol round probably has to poor of a ballistic coefficient. I was hoping that someone knew about an extremely efficient 90-125 grain rifle round that could get to 200 with enough energy.

I Picked up a Micro 7 in 300BLK. I am in the process of getting the pieces together to shoot it suppressed with my TiRant 45, I also picked up a Savage 11 hog hunter in 223, which I have suppressed. I will let you know how both work. I know the 223 won't be subsonic, but I will be able to tell you what both sound like to the human ear from a distance, If I ever get glass for either one :? Buying optics is the worst part to me. I don't know why I hate it so bad.

Optics Planet. My wholesale price usually isn't much lower than their regular sale price.

ANY sub-sonic cartridge will have a huge drop at 200. Plenty that will reach that far with enough oomph to do in a yote. None without massive drop though.

this is where a good range finder is worth its cost. for subs, difference between 200 and 220 yards is a meaningfull difference in point of impact. supers, not so much...

As just one example, this is an 'approximate/calculated' table of drop & energy I'm dealing with shooting a sub-sonic 585 gr bullet using a 100yd zero:

Range Drop Velocity Energy

0 -1.5 1051.9 1429.6
25 +1.9 1038.1
50 +3.4 1024.9
75 +2.8 1012.5 1324.6
100 -0.0 1000.7 1293.8
125 -4.9 989.4 1264.9
150 -12.1 978.7 1237.7
175 -21.5 968.5 1212.0
200 -33.2 958.7 1187.7
225 -47.3 949.4 1164.6
250 -63.8 940.4 1142.7
275 -82.7 931.8 1121.8
300 -104 923.5 1101.9

If the point of aim is 200yds, but the actual distance to the target is only 25 yds further - the point of impact will be low by 14" and a complete miss, yet at 200 the projo has lost less than a hundred fps velocity from the muzzle.

Thanks. We are currently discussing 44rm and 300 blk.

I've got both, and they are both rainbows after 100 yards. Shooting a 220SMK at 1020 in the 300BLK and a 300 grain Hornady XTP in the 44 at 1025 fps. The 44 hits like a truck. Zeroed at 90 yards for max point blank range of 107, it is running 885 fps with 580 ft/lbs, but is 40 inches low. As has been demonstrated above, at 210 yards it is 47 inches low. At 190, it is 35 inches low. A good rangefinder and a well recorded range book are the only ways to accomplish what you're after.

Thank you for using the term in the correct way! The movie industry has misguided the masses into thinking that 'point blank' darn near means 'contact shot' when nothing could be further from the truth.

"In external ballistics, point-blank range is the distance between a firearm and a target of a given size such that the bullet in flight is expected to strike the target without adjusting the elevation of the firearm. The point-blank range will vary with the firearm and its particular ballistic characteristics, as well as the target chosen. A firearm with a flatter trajectory will permit a farther maximum point-blank range for a given target size, while a larger target will allow for a longer point-blank range for a given firearm."[1]
