Best subsonic bullet for 300AAC?

Post by Joker31D »

I have my paperwork in for my Rifle can but if it doesnt come back in time I'll end up using my Osprey to hunt with. Does anyone know a good load/round for huting with the 300AAC out of a 10.5" SBR that will stay subsonic. I load alot, have access to a Chronograph but not a ton of cash for bullets so I dont want the $5/bullet expanding stuff that looks like somebody just bought a new lasercutter. I never loaded subsonics for my rifle up until now, never had a reason to do it, last year loaded some 147's for my Daughter to hunt with but never put the can on because I knew they weren't subs, also it wasn't legal. now I'm doing a bunch of hunting this year and want to drop a bunch of hogs and deer. My highest count for a weekend for hogs was 22 because I got too tired so it doesnt need to be something that I can make hundreds of. But it needs to be inexpensive, so far I am going after Gemtech subs if I dont find something else (I cant find cheap expanding rounds so FMJ's are what I'm looking at) Thanks

Do you reload? If not, the most reliable factory load i have used subsonic with expansion was 194gr Lehigh Defense...pricier, but you wont really use many rounds between sighting in and hunting...watch their site for sales. Most of the rest WON'T expand a sub velocities, so you might as well grab quality loads that use 220gr SMKs or Hornady 208 Amax...

I'm too cheap to buy the 240 grain Sierra hpbt, so I buy the 220 grain round nose. About 9 grains of H110 gives me 1050 fps.

I do reload, less lately but I do, can't say I have ever shot a non-reload 300AAC, I was a very early adopter, like pre-saami...I picked it up at work and kinda ran with it for a while, been hunting for a while but now I'm going to be using it with my Can. The lehigh stuff is too much for me, I shoot a lot of hogs when I hunt, I don't hate them enough to spend that kind of money on them. 220gr SMK's it is I guess.

For performance similar to the SMK and cheaper price, i like the Nos 190 CC that can be bought in bulk from shooter's pro shop from time to time. I don't quite get the accuracy from my 208 AMAXs, but they are good for plinking and, if accurate in your rifle, would be pretty close in how they impact the target...good luck and safe shooting!

I do like things in the 220 gr range for subs as they tend to flat spin on impact. Very nasty on game. The 220 gr SMK, 225 gr Hornady OTM, and the 220 gr Nosler OTM all work quite well in my 1:8 16" 300 blk and my 1:7 8.5" 300 BLK.

I like the 225 Hornady's, almost as long as a 240 SMK but about half the price. 240SMK still a favorite of mine, I just reserve them for hunting.

Never tried these but they are on my buy list once they become available due to the fact that they don't cost as much as the Lehigh defense bullets to reload. Still not cheap but about 2/3 the cost of the lehighs for the bullets that will cycle an AR and expand at subsonic speed.

Is it an osprey 9 or 45? I shot a friend's 16" 300blk with his osprey 45 and I was unimpressed

osprey 45, havent shot it with 300aac yet but with the 45 is nice, wish it was smaller and serviceable but its good for the 45. I only have 3 cans right now and my main concern is hearing loss or triggering a Flash back for some guys.... I had a flash back triggered the first time I shot full auto when I first got home. Unfortunately it happens quite frequently for guys, its just a trigger to the PTSD. My trigger now (That I havent gotten over) is Hand sanitizer, the smell mainly. Its a weird thing, its rarely dangerous (Unlike what the media puts out) and just a hard thing to get over. Meds are not always to right answer.

I plan on using the Saker on my 10" 300AAC and the osprey on a 16" for the Wounded Veterans Non-Profit I'm a part of.

I wrote this post almost a year ago but I dont believe in killing a post off because they are good reference. I have been buying loaded gemtech subs and they are good but expensive. Sierra Matchkings are pretty good too but expensive also.

For non-reloaders who like the 194 gr Lehighs, Beck Ammunitin has them for about 35 bucks for 20 reds, as opposed to 50 brucks for the Lehigh factory loads.
