night vision scope setup

Post by cassieaaron »

I am looking into setting up my suppressed 308 for night time hog hunting. usually stand hunting so 200 yards would be about my max range i would need. Not really wanting to spend $3k on this set up.
i have been hearing alot about new technology or at least new to me on these infared flashlights attached to old 1st gen scopes bringing them new life? old $399 ATN scope with a new infared light all capable seee alot further than before?
any suggestions ?

There have been some great advances in ir lights but I don't think you will get the performance you want out to 200 yards.

My circle of friends are migrating to the Pulsa N550 Digisight due to cost/benefit. Basically an IR sensitive video cam chip intergrated into a 4 power optical sight. About $1300 new. It functions in full daylight too but the daytime resolution is far less than a conventional scope. It has a built in illuminator but for 200 yds you would need to augment that with another more powerful ir emitter. They range from $100 to $350. So for well under $1800 you are good to go. It can also be tripod mounted and tied to a TV, recorder or other video device. Youtube has lots of demnstration videos.

BTW these are all hog hunters.

Almost as good as good Gen III but not quite. My friend just took five hogs in one night; the longest shot was 200 yds with 1/2 moon. When I went to pick him up he let me watch him through the Digisight at the 200 yd hog and I could make out the brim of his hat.

To OP- I've got the ATN MK 390 ($450) and MK 410 ($525). Both Gen 1. If you're planning on stand hunting, yes, you can see to 200 yards. I ring the 200 yard 8 inch gong at night, even on moonless/ overcast ink black nights. With NV, the humidity is what really limits the effectiveness of IR lights. What I use to light things up at 200 yards with IR- Brinkman QBeam rechargable 2 or 3 million spotlight, remove the glass lens and replace it with an IR filter like ebay item #220959072870 / 220954436454, depending on the size you need. I'm not saying that these particular filters work, but I've gotten some off ebay that sound just like them. With this set up, I can clearly see the 10 inch 300 yard gong with the 5X MK410 when it's pitch black out. Can still see it with the 4X MK390, but not as well. With subsonic 308/ BLK or sub 44 Mags with 300 grain XTPs, can hit the 200 gong at night using the IR Qbeam. WIth supers out of the 308 or the Blackout, no problem ringing the 300 yard gong with the MK410.

WOuld I want to carry it around stalking the field edges? No. Does it work great from a fixed position like a good stand? You betchya.

I'm waiting on someone to come out with an IR version of the SubZero Laser Genetics ND-3.
