Sub 38 spc out of 16" H&R

Be careful -- low-volume ratio loads can detonate. Mangement not responsible for load data. Use at your own risk.

Sub 38 spc out of 16" H&R

Post by Shamrock-MP »

I ordered some MBC 140 grain TFCP

http://www.missouribullet.com/results.p ... econdary=9

I want to reload subs for 16" Handi rifle.

Anyone used these or have a suggestion for any of their other .38's? I have Trail Boss, Bullseye, LIL Gun and IMR 4227. Since the world is out of powder i'd like to stick with these.

My experience...Most of the published loads for pistols using faster burning powders (I use HP38) are still subsonic out of the longer barrel. This should hold true with Trailboss as well. Look at the cowboy action loads on their website. Most of that data is for cast bullets, though. And I have only used Trailboss for Subsonic AK and. 308 loads, never tried it with 38.

Be careful with jacketed loads at the lower velocities. I used a published load for a 125 gr JHP that worked great from a handgun, but it got stuck in my 22" 357 Handi.

I am doing a 357 handi-rifle with 9mm can. Hornady 180 xtp with 5.6 grains of Unique and a Penn State Bullets 230grain cast Thunderhead (flying brick) at 5.1 grain Unique. Using bulleyes I would drop these loads back .4--.5 grains and chrono. for subsonic I would go for the heaviest bullets for any given caliber I was working a load up for.

If you have Bullseye, I would give that a try. I use W231 with the same bullet in my Marlin 1894C in 38 Special cases (no suppressor) and it is fairly quiet at about 850 fps.

I would love any more information any one has on loads for the H&R 357 barrel setup.

I have mine cut to 16" and threaded. I'm currently using my Liberty Mystic on it and its super quiet. The problem is that the only load I've tried (158 gr Berry's RN)(my buddy loaded them up for IDPA and his S&W 686) was horrible in the accuracy dept. I have a bunch of wadcutters and SMC's from 125gr to 160gr to try.

Anyone with 38sp. loads for this setup would be greatly appreciated. I have a bunch of Hodgon Titegroup and some Win 231. Not opposed to picking up some new powder to try.

All I have tried is factory jacketed 158s and I got the same thing. EXTREMELY quiet but terrible accuracy.

Ive been trying to find some Hornady Leverevolution just to see if that might group decent enough to hunt with.

I've been doing a little experimenting with the 160's and have been getting decent accuracy. I have loaded up a few of some 148 hollow base WC's, 125gr JHP, 140 JHP. All the loads I'm testing are using Hodgon Titegroup. Hopefully over Thanksgiving I'll get to the range and chrono them.
