Post by starlingstalker »

If You are able to load 458 SOCOM ammo on a Dillion 1050, how did you get the powder measure/ drop to work? starlingstalker :?

Not sure about the 1050 but I load 458SOCOM on my 550 and have no problems with the powder drop.

I load the test ammo for cycling pistol, SBR and standard length AR uppers in significant quantity for a custom build shop on a 1050. I am using the Lee dies on a on Rock Chucker to build these pricey rounds but still not able to figure out the powder dispensing for the 458 as there are clearance issues with the primer magazine and the Lee powder measure. My smith called Dillon but no powder drop or dies made for the 458.
Could another Dillon powder funnel for another specific caliber length be retooled and or cut to specs? I have 2 smiths that can build to Your specifications.
How do you have the 458 set up for the 550? And where to find a 458 SAAMI case gauge as I check 100 percent of my rounds and have the Wilson and Sheridan slotted gauges?
Thank You for your expertise,

I use the "A" powder funnel (same one I use for .223) and at the end of the die there is a little ridge that keeps the powder funnel from falling out I had to bore it out, stock it's .530 ID I bored it to .550.

Works great.

The only reason I had to open up the die was because for the 458 to activate the powder measure using the "A" funnel, it had to go up into the die.

The base of a 458 socom case is a larger OD than the ID on the die. A longer powder funnel would work so the base of the case doesn't need to be as high in the die to get a full stroke out of the measure.
