Subsonic 9mm/45acp powder...

Be careful -- low-volume ratio loads can detonate. Mangement not responsible for load data. Use at your own risk.

Subsonic 9mm/45acp powder...

Post by BadKarmaZeroSix »

Just jumping into reloading 9mm and 45acp after doin rifle calibers for awhile. More than likely, i will have an Octane 45 on form 4 soon, and threaded barrels for my HK Expert 45, SA Loaded Op 1911 45, and S&W M&P9 which the can will be used on all...
I would like to find a powder that i can use for good subsonic/suppressed loads in both calibers...after researching some, i am thinking W231/HP38 should do both well with proper projectiles. Is this a good choice? My budget for powder has mostly gone to my 300 AAC habit, and would like to start with a winning handgun powder with little "waste" as far as powder/projectile purchases that just wont even come close to what i want to do...
Any specific loads appreciated greatly -- sticking to plated/jacketed rounds for now...thanks guys!

Subsonic 9mm and 45 isn't hard to make. For the .45, the 230gr is already subsonic. The 9mm benefits from a 147gr bullet, but 124/125gr and 135gr bullets can be used as well.

Fast powders are better for subsonic, like W231/HP38, Zip, Titegroup, #2, WST, N310, N320, Green Dot, Red Dot, Clays, International, Titewad, Bullseye, etc. Look at a Relative Burn Rate chart. You want to use powders between #3 and #23.
Manufacturer of the best subsonic 9mm ammunition.

I've used Titegroup and VV N320 for 9mm and 45 Auto subsonic. Of the two I prefer the N320, it's super clean and low flash.

+1 for 320, its my favorite in 9mm. CFE pistol isn't bad either.

330 is supposed to be better, but I hear its discontinued.
Proper grammar is awesome.

I use W231 for both. Works great, no complaints other than its hard to find solid data on 147gr 9mm. That said, I've been using it since 2007 or so with no issues.

Search around. It used to be in loading manuals (books) a long time ago. Since then, it has been dropped for better powders for the application.

Searching the internet and hand loading databases, you can still find data.

The general consensus is 3.4gr to 4gr of WW231 under a 147gr jacketed 9mm bullet.

My personal load that I have been using for many years now is 3.8gr. Works with Jacketed and Plated 147gr bullets and it cycles everything I have ever tested it in (Glock, Sig, STI 2011, Kahr, 9mm AR15 SBR).

Thanks. I could find a few "googles" on it, but not on sites that i was familiar enough to trust...your suggestion falls right in line with them, so i will use it for my "work up procedure", since i remain OCD with my reloading, especially the safety aspects...
Good to get clarification from this site -- thanks again for your help!

The 700X has been pretty clean I can shoot the entire day and the guns have just a very light coat of buildup. I just started to experiment with 700X and 150 grain bullets in the 300 Blackout with some very good results, in a 16 inch barrel suppressed it was super quite and very clean.
