what projectile to use in 300 WSM for deer subsonic?

assuming powder to be Trail Boss

am thinking of trying to make my 300 WSM quieter than with just a can...

seems too loud, even though you don't need ear plugs..

want to be able to hunt on small track of land without disturbing folks nearby (June, - landowner, works odd shifts and sleeps during early morning hunt times)

deer would be Texas hill country size- field dress 50 to 100 lbs

What twist do you have? Standard is 1:10, which pretty much limits you to 180-200grs depending on the design.

You need to be really careful working up your load, 300WSM subs are probably a new frontier. You'll probably need to start with 12 grains, and slowly work down. My 308 subs are a hair over 10 grains, and they hit about 1060fps.

I have some expanding bullets from these guys http://www.blackoutbullets.com/. I have the AR15 ones for 300 blackout, and testing into milk cartons full of water look just like their test picture. Loaded with IMR 4227 and going through a 10.5" barrel and suppressor they come out to ~995 fps. https://www.lehighbullets.com/ also has subsonic expanding options. Pretty much all of the regular .308 caliber bullets that expand at full speed just fine won't expand at the lower velocities and will just punch a small hole right through.

With 1:11 I'd be surprised if you will be able to stabilize bullets heavier than 180grs, but you should dig around to see what others have done.

As for load development I recently introduced the concept of "critical charge" which is basically the smallest charge that could produce a certain pressure given instantaneous combustion. This was developed with quickload for use in 30-06 and should be usable for most rounds.

Critical charge = pressure in ksi * case capacity in grains H2O / 250.

For 300WSM (64.5ksi/81.5grs case capacity) this ends up at 21grs, meaning that any charge below this should in theory be completely safe regardless of powder or bullet. I would stay below 15grs just to be safe.

looks like the Leigh bullet would be 170 grs (150 base bullet with 20 gr 17 payload projo)...

from what I read here... that should stabilize in the 1- 11 twist

still waiting on new cases for the subsonic reloading

It's really not the weight, but the length of a bullet that determines the twist rate needed at a particular speed, so do some testing

IMHO I would get the outlaw bullets before i get the lehigh. I have fired my fair share of lehigh bullets and when they work, they work good but if you hit any kind of bone with the controlled fracture bullets before hitting "wet" they will not expand. the outlaw state bullets will still expand even if hitting bone. their 308 210gr EXPANDING SUBSONIC ROUND NOSE bullet says it will stabilize in a 11.25 TWIST BARREL.
