Odd 40S&W brass

Post by cdhknives »

I was processing a bucket of range brass over the weekend. Yes I tend to pick up everything brass after I shoot, and sort later. Clean range brass gets used just like my own. I went to run a batch of reloads from this sorted brass and kept having primers that would not go into the pocket. On closer inspection, it was all on Winchester stamped (not WIN stamped) brass, and the primer pockets were crimped! The flash holes were also much larger, making me think lead free ammo at first, but why crimp it?

Is there milspec, crimped primer, 40S&W ammo out there that I've never seen? I'd hate to have to start running 40 brass through the primer swage tool...223 brass is already enough trouble with that.

I've never seen crimped 40S&W... Plenty of 9mm and 223 of course.

I hate swaging primer pockets as well, but that's partially why I ended up with a pair of Dillon 1050s...

Most likely the "NT" or "Non-Toxic" ammo.
I've ran across this with Federal Brass.
What a PITA, especially when you're not expecting it.
