people bragging on their loads

Be careful -- low-volume ratio loads can detonate. Mangement not responsible for load data. Use at your own risk.

people bragging on their loads

Post by AkGun&ammo »

Bytes my ass sometimes...

Today a "shooter" came in and claimed his reloads were getting "3350 fps with a 180 grain in a 300 WSM with xx.x grains of IMRxxxx." Now most folks know that the 300 WSM is a pet of mine, I really like it. So I was pretty sure he was blowing smoke. Tonight, I went ahead and tried to get HIS STATED POWDER AND LOAD into one of my cases anyway... even with a 16" drop tube and pulverizing the powder, couldn't get all of it in the case.

Do some people just want to blantantly lie about their reloading skills? Or do they want people to THINK they know what they are doing.

Like I said, It chaps me backside.

Thanks for letting me whine...

Maybe ask for one of his cases next time you see him ... and a bullet sample.

The 8 might be on the end of that bullet weight instead of the middle or he's off by a couple letters in the 300 XXM department?

Yeah, for some people everything is a contest. Guess they have small dicks and feel the need to compensate or something. I've met a lot of people using loads that's clearly unsafe, but in their clueless world that is somehow manly. Sad little people with sad little lives.

That being said, don't forget that "your mileage may vary" always applies. Different brass, different lot of powder, perhaps an unusually long chamber, who knows. I doubt this was the case here, if you can't get all the powder into the case you're way beyond slight component variations. Perhaps he only remembered it wrong? Sometimes these things have innocent explanations, so I'm always a but careful about tearing folks down in case I end up the bigger jerk.

found out the hard way when I started working in the "city". Everyone is full of s--t & will BS their way into whatever it is.
Met plenty. Dumbfounding they keep their job. In some cases I do their job better just as a side hobby.

maybe a bit of rant in there...

We don't get a ton of bragger's here due to we have a indoor range with crono. When we due we simply offer the range and a waiver and a blast shield LOL We are still trying to find the remaining parts of a .45colt Uberti.

follow -up report...

I was on the range with a crony when the guy showed up this afternoon.

Appartently he had forgotten he had talked up his load previosly... so.....
He started in again how fast, how accuract, blah, blah! (blah,blah...)

I invited him to fire a couple rounds over the screen (after he confirm zero.)

2746 fps was the average of five shots, not even close to the 3350 fps he was claiming.
grouping looked nice though, about 1 inch maybe little less.

He said my chrony was wrong.

Yep, they must still believe there's one born every day.

By the way his buddy wasn't empressed with the spiel either. He asked about how he could get on the range without being this guy's guest.

I sure glad I don't "hear" this kind of BS all the time. (even in the Gun Shop I work in)

onct again thanks for listening to my whine,

Chris

Wow, 600 fps less than he claimed is a lot. He actually may have a defective chrony and thought he'd struck the mother lode for reloads.
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

This could go in the "bitch and whine" section. The 'expert reloader' is one of the higher forms of gun shop counter dwelling expert. Tales of load development and marksmanship that can make a fly fisherman blush, and there aren't many who lie more than them outside of politics.
