Cycling subsonic in custom LR308

Post by Low-Light »

Long time lurker first time poster.
I have assembled a DPMS LR308 with a custom barrel and gas block
that allows me fire super, super suppressed, and subsonic all cycle.

The barrel is a 16" PAC-NOR 7 twist super match, chambered in m118lr
chamber, carbine length gas system gas port drilled to .120"

After a couple of gas block changes I settled on the MICRO MOA 3
position plate with ports drilled at .043", .0625", .120".

I feel this could be done with success on a mid length gas system 10 twist.
The port in the gas block plate would have to be increased.

I like to use IMR SR4759 and AA5744 with a magnum primer.
This rifle is submoa in subsonic and supersonic.

The lightest bullet to cycle subsonic in this configuration, is 175smk
and the heaviest being 260gr outlaw state bullets.

If this were a 10 twist a 200 gr smk would probably be the limit or a
220gr rn.

This rifle started life as a DPMS 308 Oracle.
The only operational parts that were changed
not including furniture and trigger, are the barrel
and gas block. Trigger is a 3lb JP.

Just tried 150gr Seirra fmj 12gr imr sr4759
Fed LR mag primer, 2.685 COAL with lee factory crimp
This load is also sub sonic last round hold open
I need to shoot paper, to see how well this load groups.

Think that load would work on a 1-10 twist with the same reamed gas port? I have a spare barrel in the rack and a ton of 147gr pills.

Yes as long as your barrel stabilizes. I started with a DPMS with NATO chamber
and it would not stabilize anything I put through it. I have seen this in 2 different
NATO chambered DPMS barrels. Recovered bullets showed rifling heavier on one
side. Chambers may have been cut wrong. These same barrels shot
supersonic ok though.

Just tried 145gr orange tip tracer
12 gr of imr sr 4759 coal 2.780"
Lee factory crimp
Subsonic, locks the bolt carrier open and lights the tracer.
No accuracy test yet.

Look for aa5744 also, or imr 4227.
Unfortunately these powders are popular
in the 300blackout.

If you are interested I can make you reduced capacity cases
contact Outlaw State Bullets LLC. We haven't put them
on the market as of yet. This would allow you to
use other powders.

I can turn my own cases, just was hoping that something like RL15 would work or some other slow burning powders.

We don't turn cases we use already existing cases.
I don't think R15 is the way to go I probably would stick
to 748 or faster. Reloader 7, imr 1498, are good also.

I will play with imr 4198 tomorrow. I haven't tried it yet but I
think it will work in this application.
