This is why you always have a fire extinguisher in your car

Post by bakerjw »

This is why you always have a fire extinguisher in your car. It will not stop a fire for an entire vehicle, but it can buy a few seconds of time and that can be the difference in outcomes.

My life was probably saved by a guy with a fire extinguisher. I was involved in a horrible wreck in 2008. I was pinned in my car with a dislocated hip and my engine caught fire. Luckily one of the other involved drivers had an extinguisher in his dump truck, and put the fire out.

Good call, I need to do this as well.

I used to own a little airplane. It had a tiny fire extinguisher, but it was a genuine HALON model; halon, the good stuff. Not CO2, not funky powder. Unfortunately, halon apparently kills spotted owls and it is hard to find for consumer use, although you can still get one at places that supply aviation.

Anyway, I kept it. It sat around for 15 years. Four months ago, I was trying to get a Coleman fluid camping stove going, and it pretty much blew up. 6 foot flames, and the coleman fluid began to spread. I used the little Halon on it, and it took about one cow fart's worth to totally snuff the fire. Elapsed time, 0.2 seconds. Amazing.

So if you can find Halon, buy it! :D

Halon kills people too. Displaces oxygen immediately, but is safe for electronics and there is no clean up.
That is probably why its not easily available to the common folks.

I remember when a cherry accidentally popped a flare inside a Stryker on a field exercise. That Halon system hit so hard it was almost like getting knocked unconscious- left us dazed and confused, couldn't breathe. Not a fun feeling.
