max range for cctv camera placement

Post by fasttwist »

I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with cctv in an electronic perimeter role.
What type of equipment would be used for this application from 100 yd to 300 yd. If possible 800yd.
Thank you for your input.

It's all about the camera. Most CCTV applications are wide angle and are only good for a short distance. Some are for farther away, and some can be set with a manual zoom. It's also a matter of $$$s.

Si.

Most "long range" cameras I'm familiar with are good out to a max of 100 yards but not with any amount of resolution that can provide positive identity. Mostly they're good for letting you see something is moving. I've never seen anything that will provide enough resolution at 800 yards to identify anything other than a blob and the field of view at that range renders the device totally useless for motion detection software.

Yaggi type antennas are great for line of sight links between a camera and a TV/DVR but you still need to provide power at both ends.

What is it you're trying to secure?

Are you trying to monitor one road out to 800 yards or or are you trying to secure the perimeter of your 125 acre compound?

The visual range of the camera is not as important as position. I guess I need to know how far I could get away with using the Siamese power and coax cable first as anything more is will get spendy. The 800 yard cam would be to view a gate over a hill so the Yaggy would probably have to be repeated and the camera would have to be solar powered.

Aye captain. Up north we'd go for broke and buy 2 walkies. Figure any language barrier inhibitions would sort itself out in the tonal inflections relative threat perception.

Present video surveliance needs are in the 50ft range.
