Sadly the sunspot cycle is dismal. When I first got into HAM radio, we were at a minimum and it was a struggle to make contact with anyone. Kind of like it is now.

With the current political situation like it is, getting a good HAM radio and modding/jail breaking it makes good sense.

To answer the original question - I don't have much to say about mobile radios as I don't have one, but if you want a handheld with 5 watts and the ability to talk on FRS, GMRS, MURS, 2-meter, 70-cm, business band, and public safety frequencies (nothing blocked), the Baofeng UV-82 is only $29 at Amazon. I have two of them and love them. Get the $5 programming cable and a remote mic also. They are worth 3x what they sell for. In fact, the higher-priced Japanese radios are all locked to certain bands.

I got my 7200 and set it up to a computer running WSPR software that sends out beacons with my call sign.

Using only 2-8 watts and a wire antenna low to the ground, it was spotted in Australia (18836km away), Brazil, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Belgium, Engand, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Ontario, and lots of US states.

Note that you can't compare this to voice communications as the data is very narrow bandwidth so it can be decoded with a much higher signal-to-noise ratio. It also takes two minutes to send just 72 bits/13 characters - but that is why such low power can be decoded so far away.
